How Adjunct Faculty At Community Colleges Describe Their Sustained Motivation To Teach, Maureen E. Sheridan
How Adjunct Faculty At Community Colleges Describe Their Sustained Motivation To Teach, Maureen E. Sheridan
Publications and Research
There is mounting concern over the influence that hiring larger percentages of adjunct faculty has had on the quality of instruction delivered in higher education. Studies have noted these contingent workers are being hired as an economic resource or commodity rather than viewed as academic partners. This basic inductive study on adjunct faculty in northeast U.S. two-year colleges was important to add to the existing body of knowledge. Utilizing a basic inductive approach allowed the researcher to explore adjunct faculty experiences and to gather data through individualized, semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was examined through the lens of hygiene-motivation theory that …
Socio-Economic Inequalities, Academic Failure, And Institutional Interventions: What Cuny Is Doing To Help Its High Risk Populations, Cynthia Constant
Socio-Economic Inequalities, Academic Failure, And Institutional Interventions: What Cuny Is Doing To Help Its High Risk Populations, Cynthia Constant
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
There is a lack of adequate research of the City University of New York’s (CUNY) school-based programs and services that are designed to aid and empower students in achieving academic success. These programs serve an urban based student population. A substantial number of these students are of low income and from historically underrepresented cultural and ethnic backgrounds. A significant portion of these students also attend a community college like Kingsborough Community College (KBCC) in the CUNY system. For most of this student population academic success is not easily obtained. This study examines the rationale behind student failure, as well as, …
The Remedy That's Killing: Cuny, Laguardia, And The Fight For Better Math Policy, Rachel A. Oppenheimer
The Remedy That's Killing: Cuny, Laguardia, And The Fight For Better Math Policy, Rachel A. Oppenheimer
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Nationwide, there is a crisis in math learning and math achievement at all levels of education. Upwards of 80% of students who enter the City University of New York’s community colleges from New York City’s Department of Education high schools fail to meet college level math proficiencies and as a result, are funneled into the system’s remedial math system. Once placed into pre-college remedial arithmetic, pre-algebra, and elementary algebra courses, students fail at alarming rates and research indicates that students’ failure in remedial math has negative ripple effects on their persistence and degree completion. CUNY is not alone in facing …

A Tale Of Two Placements: Influences Of Esl Designation On The Identities Of Two Linguistic Minority Community College Students, Jennifer Maloy
A Tale Of Two Placements: Influences Of Esl Designation On The Identities Of Two Linguistic Minority Community College Students, Jennifer Maloy
Publications and Research
This article draws upon interviews with two Generation 1.5 students at an urban community college with a large multilingual student population, demonstrating the ways in which ESL designation and writing placement affect students’ constructions of identity. It compares and contrasts the experiences of one student who is placed into an ESL-‐designated developmental writing course and one student who is placed into a developmental writing course for native English speakers (NES), exploring the extent to which this placement validates and/or challenges their self-‐conceptions as students and writers. It also promotes investigation of placement procedures that perpetuate divisions between ESL and NES …
