Ethical knowledge and skill is crucial to the discipline of nursing and is considered foundational knowledge for nursing practice (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2008). Nurses who assume roles in clinical teaching may be clinically competent but may have limited nursing education experience or knowledge in clinical instruction. The purpose of this project was to improve the educational experience of clinical instructors in the teaching of ethics to students in the clinical setting. Due to the significant nursing faculty shortage and the probable impact on healthcare, it is imperative to expand the available literature on the nursing faculty shortage. The descriptive data in this study highlight the critical nature of the aging and retiring nursing faculty body. The statistics available in this study regarding this are quite alarming. The Northeast may be looking at a mass exodus of nursing faculty in the next 5 years with up to 70 percent of the faculty leaving their current position. Research by Dominican University of California nursing professor Patricia Harris examines the accuracy of physiological monitor alarms in the intensive care unit. ICU monitors measure multiple physiological factors and trigger alarms when changes are detected in cardiac rhythm, respiratory rate, blood pressure, or other parameters. The long-term goal of Harris’ work is to increase patient safety.

In this paper, we report on the findings of a research study that sought to answer the following questions: (i) How do current nursing students’ perceptions compare with those of actual working nurses regarding the mathematics and technology demands involved in nursing?; and, (ii) What types of course structures, content, pedagogy, or other recommendations could more effectively prepare nurses for the realities of the workplace in light of mathematics and technology demands? Dr. Markmann was born in 1948 at the Anderson Hospital in Center City, Philadelphia. She was the fourth of eleven children born into a household of her mother, her father and her grandparents. She grew up in Philadelphia and has lived in the area for her entire life only leaving once after she completed nursing school. During her childhood her extended family lived nearby, her grandmother lived down the street and her Aunt and Uncle lived in the opposite direction. Deficiencies in new nursing graduates’ ability to use critical thinking skills have been documented.
