The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is an effort to minimize the learning gap between high- and low-achieving students in the United States by providing a set of standards all students must meet by the end of each grade level. Although 43 states have adopted the CCSS, there are varied opinions on whether this new reform will create positive change within America’s school systems. This research examined the opinions of citizens in Connecticut by analyzing written testimonies from a public hearing that took place in Hartford on March 12, 2014. This study introduces a novel concept, Extended Stereotype Threat (EST). EST is based on stereotype threat, whereby one is concerned that he/she may confirm a negative stereotype associated with being a member of a targeted group. EST extends stereotype threat as someone outside a targeted group (e.g., a parent of a dyslexic child) fears that a member of that group (i.e., his/her child) will confirm a negative stereotype associated with the group. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) recipients represent a new and somewhat unexplored population within the undocumented immigrant community. Having only been introduced three years ago, they live within a state of liminality, legally present in the United States for the first time but with the understanding that it can be stripped from them without a moments warning. This research project is designed to tell the stories and experiences of Dominican immigrant students living in New York City. For decades, immigration and educational policies in both the Dominican Republic and the United States have been widely discussed and criticized by scholars and members of this compelling community. Political leaders have often used state education systems as a tool for nation building, using school curricula to shape citizens’ national identity to be consistent with their long-term political goals. In this paper, I analyze the narratives of past kings in government-issued history textbooks in Burma examine the political and social values the Burmese State attempts to transmit to students in the process of building a national identity. A growing body of research suggests that parents’ involvement in their children’s schooling is an important factor for student academic achievement. In the Greater Hartford area, the changing landscape of public education options emerging from the 1996 Connecticut Supreme Court ruling in Sheff v. O’Neill has put an emphasis on understanding factors impacting academic achievement for low-income students of color. This study examines how parents of color living in public housing perceive their role in their children’s schooling.
