Paying Students For Grades: Is It Sustainable And Should It Be?, Allison Butler, Kristin Kennedy, Michaela Kennedy

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

This paper highlights some of the most notable cash incentive programs, questions why the flow of money into these programs is not totally transparent and well known to the taxpayers who fund some of them, and reviews literature on the psychological, motivational, and ethical issues surrounding this policy. We would like to question how much public funding is being spent, especially since towns and school systems are struggling in these difficult financial times with miniscule operating budgets.

The Academic Success Of Homeschooled Students In A South Carolina Technical College, Jack N. Bagwell Jr

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In 2010, homeschooling was increasing in prevalence in the United States. Yet, little was known about the academic achievement of these students as they matriculated into colleges and universities. The purpose of this mixed methods sequential explanatory study was to examine the academic success achieved by the homeschooled population (N=273) and a sample of the traditionally educated students (N=273) who had enrolled in credit courses between the years of 2001 and 2008 at York Technical College, a comprehensive community college in South Carolina. In the quantitative phase of the study, academic success measures included COMPASS placement scores in writing, pre-algebra, …

The Relationship Between Prekindergarten Social And Emotional Development And Academic Success Among Hispanic Children From Low-Income Families, Christina More Muelle

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social and emotional development has been considered an important factor in child development which has been placed at the end of the learning spectrum due to high stakes testing. Social and emotional development consists of the relationships an individual has with others, the level of self-control, and the motivation and perseverance a person has during an activity (Bandura, 1989). This study examined the relationship between Hispanic children’s prekindergarten social and emotional development and their academic success. Hispanic children from a large southeastern city whose parents were receiving subsidized child-care were followed from their prekindergarten year through third grade (N=1,978). Several …

Parental Involvement In Home Work For Children’S Academic Success. A Study In The Cape Coast Municipality, Dampson George

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Traditionally, parental involvement in education included contribution to their children’s home-based activities (helping with home-work, encouraging children to read, and promoting school attendance) and school-based activities (attending Parent-Teachers’ Association meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and participating in fun raising activities). Hixson (2006) explained that involvement of parents and families in decision making is often cited as one of the most important ways to improve public schools. Parental involvement makes an enormous impact on the student’s attitude, attendance, and academic achievement and promotes better cooperation between parents and school. It also allows parents and teachers to combine efforts to help the children succeed …

Achieving Academic Success In Algebra, Jennifer Geno Jan 2010

Achieving Academic Success In Algebra, Jennifer Geno

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

When we look at landmark legislation that significantly impacted the face of education in our country, we often think of events such as the passage of the Education of All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, whereby students with disabilities would now be brought into our public school system and educated alongside of their non-handicapped peers. We may also think of the landmark decision in Oliver L. Brown et. al. v. The Board of Education of Topeka (Kansas) in 1954, abolishing legalized racial segregation within the United States public school system. In 2006, the ground significantly shifted again for educators-at least …

Family Structure Characteristics And Academic Success: Supporting The Work Of School Counselors, Gerra Perkins, Kayla Milstead Jan 2010

Family Structure Characteristics And Academic Success: Supporting The Work Of School Counselors, Gerra Perkins, Kayla Milstead

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

The family is a child’s primary context for socialization and greatly affects a child’s well-being. Historical contexts show that families have been evolving for centuries due to social and economic factors, thus resulting in various family structures. A stable, traditional family structure is most conducive to academic success (Tillman, 2007). Much research has found that children raised in a non-traditional home are at a disadvantage (Astone & McLanahan, 1991; Halpern-Meekin & Tach, 2008). The research on the consequences of single-parent families suggests children of single parent families are more likely to be impoverished, to break the law, to abuse drugs, …

The Caring Teacher: A Multiple Case Study That Looks At What Teachers Do And Believe About Their Work With At-Risk Students, Sarah Whitney Thompson

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Caring teachers have been identified as a critical component of successful interventions with at-risk students, however just what constitutes a caring teacher is less well understood. Specifically, what are the behaviors, characteristics, and beliefs of caring teachers, and how are they impacted by the contexts within which they work? The purpose of this multiple case study was to understand more about caring teachers who work with at-risk students in secondary schools located in a Midwestern city and thereby to add complexity to the literature. Two middle school teachers and two high school teachers were recruited to participate. They were observed …

Relationship Between Membership In Deca, An Association Of Marketing Students, And Grade Point Average As An Indicator Of Academic Success, Michael Frederick Kosloski Jr.

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

Stakeholders in career and technical education, and more specifically marketing education, tout member benefits of applied learning through career and technical student organizations. However, there is little empirical evidence to support the notion that such student organizations help students to achieve academic gains. As a result, the purpose of this study was to collect and analyze empirical data to determine whether there is a relationship between DECA, An Association of Marketing Students, and academic gains as indicated by grade point average.

The study examined three relationships. The first was the relationship between DECA membership and grade point average movement, the …
