Student Work

Inexperienced teachers' perceived classroom effectiveness of their planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities domains were analyzed to determine the effects of active follow-up compared to information-based follow-up of classroom management training ( N = 50). Inexperienced teachers enrolled in I Can Do It Classroom Management Training were randomly assigned to active follow-up to the training (n = 24) or information-based follow-up to the training ( n = 26). As reflected by the pretest and posttest evaluation form measuring their perceived effectiveness in the domains of planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities, teachers participating in …

Available Classroom Supports For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders In Public Schools, Cheryl A. Sandford

NERA Conference Proceedings 2009

A self-administered electronic survey and follow-up interviews were used to determine the quality, quantity and types of supports that are provided for students with autism spectrum disorders in a variety of public school settings nationwide. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted to determine the effects of educators’ background, ongoing training and development activities, opinions and attitudes of educators on the supports available. Statistically and socially significant effects were found for a number of these characteristics. A need for increased and improved educator training in autism strategies was a prevalent theme throughout the data.

Teacher Training For Medical Students And Residents, Gates Jr. Richards

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The directors of many medical education accreditation bodies have called for an increased focus on teacher training for physicians and other medical professionals. As the role of specialist physicians becomes busier, many of their traditional teaching expectations have been transferred to residents and medical students. Many medical school directors have created Resident as Teacher (RAT) curricula to better prepare their students as educators. In this project, the author reviewed the literature relating to existing RAT programs. After reviewing the literature, the author created a RAT curriculum to be utilized on Medicine in the Wild, a month long, expeditionary medical school …

A Values, Skills And Knowledge Framework For Initial Teacher Preparation Programmes, Sylvia Chong, Horn Mun Cheah

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The purpose of this paper is to introduce an integrated values, skills and knowledge (VSK) framework for initial teacher preparation programmes. The VSK framework articulated, in broad terms, the desired skills and knowledge components for beginning teachers, with the underlying core values permeating the programmes. The paper has two parts, the first of which details the development as well as the conceptual underpinning of the VSK framework. Part two, through a programme evaluation, discusses the validity and reliability of items developed through the VSK framework to measure the values, skills and knowledge that student teachers perceived through their initial teacher …

A Training Framework And Follow-Up Observations For Multiculturally Inclusive Teaching: Is Believing That We Are Emphasizing Diversity Enough?, Joelle D. Elicker, Mindi N. Thompson, Andrea F. Snell, Allison L. O'Malley

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The authors present a theoretically and empirically grounded training for multiculturally inclusive teaching for new instructors. After implementing this training, qualitative data were gathered from instructors to identify their experience of the training and concerns related to incorporating issues of diversity into their classrooms (Study 1). At the end of the semester immediately following the training, quantitative data were gathered from instructors and their students to examine the interaction between students’ and instructors’ perceived diversity emphasis (Study 2). When allowed to choose the extent to which they incorporated issues of diversity in their classes, the instructors differentially reported emphasizing diversity …

A qualitative study was undertaken selecting 21 teacher educators and interviewing them on key objectives of the Intel Teach program. While a great body of research evidence in the United States shows the impact of positive teacher interactions on teacher-child relationship quality and beneficial school outcomes for young children, it is not clear how Thai children would respond to the kind of interactional and social-emotional practices of American teachers. In this research, teacher training through The 101s: A Guide to Positive Discipline (The 101s, Kersey, 2006) was implemented in kindergarten classrooms in Bangkok, Thailand. The purpose of the study was (a) to investigate the impact of The 101s teacher training on changes in teacher interaction practices, teacher-child relationship …
