Parent involvement is closely linked to student achievement. Research suggests that students, families, and schools benefit from active participation by families in the process of educating children. Many parents provide a broad range of support to their children, although, currently no common agreement on the most effective forms of parent support exists.
This study focused on the gap in the literature as to the needs of middle school at-risk students' parents. Qualitative methods were used to explore how parents of twelve at-risk middle school students (identified by low academic achievement scores of reading at least one year below grade level …

The Role Of Teachers In School Safety, Leslie Lee Brown
The Role Of Teachers In School Safety, Leslie Lee Brown
Dissertations
This study examined teachers' perceptions of their abilities to effectively respond to crises on their school campuses. Teachers were surveyed in numerous southeastern states in contrasting demographic areas. Much of the literature addressed acts of violence, natural disasters, and threats of terrorism in schools. Past literature designates urban areas as places where violence has been a more prevalent element of everyday life. Current evidence shows that school shootings and natural disasters can occur anywhere. This shows that planning, practicing, and preparing for crises events are imperative no matter the demographic area in which a school is located. However, there is …

Induction And Peer Coaching Programs In A Middle School Setting, Shanti Ladawn Howard
Induction And Peer Coaching Programs In A Middle School Setting, Shanti Ladawn Howard
Dissertations
While almost half of new teachers engage in some type of induction program, many programs only offer superficial types of assistance including district-wide orientations, periodic workshops, or instruction in classroom management (Gold, 1996). Some induction programs sponsored by the state institute an evaluation process that applies formulaic criteria for defining teaching behaviors to assess new teacher performances (Darling-Hammond et al., 1999). In the continued search for school improvement, there was a need to propose another option in staff development, e.g., peer coaching.
Peer coaching was examined because induction programs did not attend to the individual needs of alternatively certified teachers. …
The Emotional Intelligence And Resilience Of School Leaders: An Investigation Into Leadership Behaviors, Aileen Thompson Bumphus
The Emotional Intelligence And Resilience Of School Leaders: An Investigation Into Leadership Behaviors, Aileen Thompson Bumphus
Dissertations
Recent research suggests that leadership in schools and emotional intelligence are related. Furthermore, resiliency has been researched and found to be linked to successful leadership. As a result of these findings and the researcher's own professional experiences, it is speculated that emotional intelligence, resilience, and school leadership may be highly related factors in how one leads a school. The study of this three-factor relationship has been virtually overlooked in the research on school leadership and might prove useful in the recruitment, identification, development, and retention of effective school leaders.
A study of the emotional intelligence, resilience, and leadership of public …

We live in a society driven by a knowledge-based economy where the need for a college degree is at its highest historical level. To meet these needs, it is critical that educational systems increase students' preparation for higher education, universities receive appropriate and adequate indicators of student preparedness, and students select the college that fits their needs and ambitions and support them in their persistence towards a college degree.
The admission standards of an institution guide this process but are only one part of what is required for a student to successfully transition from high school to college to the …

Pre-Service Science Teacher Sense Of Self In Developing Multicultural Practice, Yuki Marie Monteith
Dissertations and Theses
The development of multicultural science teaching practices is becoming more crucial as the student population in public schools becomes more diverse. Content analysis of themes arising from the study identified three areas specific to their sense of self: (a) the unconscious influence of beliefs about science culture, (b) the fundamental beliefs of the U.S. middle class, and (c) superficial beliefs …

The Relationship Of Teacher Route To Certification To Student Outcomes On Statewide Social Studies Assessment, Aaron L. Smith
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
Public school divisions face daunting challenges today. One such challenge is the ability to recruit and retain highly qualified and effective teachers. Endemic teacher shortages coupled with escalating national education standards make it imperative that school divisions hire and retain teachers who can positively and immediately impact student achievement. Schools without effective teachers face possible sanctions, which could include re-staffing of the school, parental choice that would allow the student population to attend more successful schools and loss of funds.
At the same time, colleges and universities have begun alternative certification programs in an effort to compensate for teacher shortages …
