In the following study, the author describes the effectiveness of teaching drama techniques to English as a Second Language high school students. A review of literature is provided that demonstrates how integrating ESL teaching strategies with those of drama enhances language acquisition. The end product of the study is a 1 semester drama unit which meets standards of learning established by the Colorado Department of Education. It includes specific examples, source material, and worksheets which accommodate a variety of learning styles and levels. The purpose of this project will be to develop a handbook for elementary classroom teachers to be used as a reference guide to assist with the teaching and instruction of children with exceptionalities. The author of this handbook will identify best practices which are based on research. These best practices and recommendations can be immediately implemented in the classroom, based on the teacher's observations of the student's behaviors and. The purpose of this handbook is not to replace special education assistance in regard to students with exceptionalities, but would be used as a supplement to teacher expertise and guidance.
