Roots & Routes: A Re-Imagining Of Refugee Identity Constructions And The Implications For Schooling, Jacqueline Mosselson
Roots & Routes: A Re-Imagining Of Refugee Identity Constructions And The Implications For Schooling, Jacqueline Mosselson
Jacqueline Mosselson
The ways in which refugees are assumed to adapt to United States society have serious consequences on their enjoyment and fulfillment in their schooling experiences. This is further compounded by the incorporation of refugees under a more general umbrella of "immigrant" studies. Here, excerpts are shared from an experiential study of fifteen adolescent Bosnian female refugees in New York City schools to articulate an alternative identity paradigm, roots & routes, which captures the ways in which refugees consciously balance their ethnic and new national identities in understanding themselves, their lives, and how they represent themselves to others. This paradigm enables …

Socio-Academic Interaction As Predictors Of Academic-Performance For Vietnamese Government Scholarship Recipients In Us Graduate Programs, Duc-Le Nguyen
Master's Capstone Projects
This study investigates the predictability of social interaction and academic interaction to academic performance. Descriptive analysis, multiple regression analysis, factor analysis and correlation analysis of data provided by 71 students who are Vietnamese Government Scholarship Recipients in graduate programs all over the United States indicate that socio-academic interaction can be used as predictors of students' academic performance but only 15% of the predicted variance is explained by the model. The length of students' US sojourn has effect on both social and academic interaction and degree sought by students has effect on academic interaction. Gender and length of exposure to English …

Peace Education As A Coexistence And Reconciliation Tool: The Context Of The Conflict Between Armenia And Azerbaijan, Rovshan Sadigbayli
Peace Education As A Coexistence And Reconciliation Tool: The Context Of The Conflict Between Armenia And Azerbaijan, Rovshan Sadigbayli
Master's Capstone Projects
Lasting peace requires more than signing a formal political agreement between adversaries. Genuine peace-building in the post-conflict settings must also include efforts aimed at reconciling opposing groups or nations.
Peace-building measures will necessarily involve formal and non-formal education and training programs aimed at changing negative attitudes and perceptions of the other side, as well as fostering peaceful coexistence and reconciliation between former belligerent parties. These activities fall under broader category of peace education as a coexistence and reconciliation tool. Peace education programs should be implemented both within formal educational systems and at the society-level.
Peace education programs in the regions …

"I Can See Now" Understanding Literacy Practices In The Context Of Afghanistan, Anita Anastacio
"I Can See Now" Understanding Literacy Practices In The Context Of Afghanistan, Anita Anastacio
Master's Capstone Projects
I have structured my paper as follows:
Chapter 2 of this paper provides an overview of the historical, political and educational context of Afghanistan out of which a project like Learning of Life, a health focused literacy project and the focus of my study emerged.
Chapter 3 familiarizes the reader with the theoretical discussions that have shaped the concept of literacy. I will do that by using a framework used by UNESCO (2006) that presents the theory using four approaches to understand the meaning of literacy.
Chapter 4 presents the methodology of the research I carried out by looking at …
Education As A Political Act: Drawing From Critical And Feminist Pedagogies To Build And Implement An Adult Education Curriculum, Wendi Carman
Master's Capstone Projects
This paper is part reflection on the curriculum building experience and part analysis of the experience with regards to the academic literature on adult education. Reflection on the experience and discussion of some theories in AE are followed by a collection of suggested resources for the curriculum, many of which speak to the issues I highlight in the paper. Adding a gender perspective to the curriculum will not only touch on issues that are commonly overlooked, but it will provide a more complete picture of issues discussed. Because the curriculum will undergo a process of constant evolution, I do not …
