Analyzing Traditional-Based Teaching Methods Versus Technology-Based Teaching Methods In Collegiate Aviation Classrooms, Robert Rhett Coleman Yates Dec 2004

Analyzing Traditional-Based Teaching Methods Versus Technology-Based Teaching Methods In Collegiate Aviation Classrooms, Robert Rhett Coleman Yates

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

This study is a comparative analysis of traditional-based teaching methods versus technology-based teaching methods in collegiate aviation classrooms. Education is in a transformational period. Technology use in the classroom is a major part of this transformation. However, this change in pedagogy is not occurring as rapid as one might believe. Out of ten undergraduate professors in the United States teaching in higher education, fewer than two seriously use computers and other technologies in their classrooms. Of the ten, four to five professors never use the machines at all. The same is true in collegiate aviation classrooms; technology-based teaching methods and …

Stressing Concepts And Teaching In The Classroom: A Low-Technology Approach Using Concept Tests And Classroom Polls, Walter S. Borowski Nov 2004

Stressing Concepts And Teaching In The Classroom: A Low-Technology Approach Using Concept Tests And Classroom Polls, Walter S. Borowski

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Electronic student response technologies can be used effectively to increase learning in the classroom. Although these systems are not terribly expensive, their purchase may be out of reach for many departments and institutions. Here we model a low-technology approach that stresses active learning, peer teaching, and testing student understanding of key concepts by using think-pair-share sessions and in-class responses to key concept-test questions.

Questions used in class are chosen carefully to emphasize a concept essential to understanding some aspect of geoscience in an introductory geology course. Each class involves the introduction of a key concept question or questions followed by: …

Editorial: Enhancing Teaching Performance: Managing Student Feedback Exercises, Lily Kong Nov 2004

Editorial: Enhancing Teaching Performance: Managing Student Feedback Exercises, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

When I was an undergraduate at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in the mid-1980s, student feedback exercises were introduced. They were manually conducted via pen-and-paper mode, with administrative staff taking about 10±15 minutes at the start of a lecture class every day in a designated week (usually the last or penultimate week of semester), distributing questionnaires and collecting the completed forms in boxes to have the responses scanned and totted up. This represented the ®rst time that a systematic data collection and feedback mechanism was instituted for students. Since then, various innovations have been introduced to manage student feedback …

Helping Children To Understand Particulate Nature Of Matter, Muhammad Riaz Sep 2004

Helping Children To Understand Particulate Nature Of Matter, Muhammad Riaz

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

Whenever I taught about the particulate nature of matter in solids, liquids and gases, I often had difficulty explaining this abstract concept to my students. The students, in turn, had much difficulty conceptualizing the structure and behavior of the particles, which ultimately led to difficulties in understanding the complex configuration of particles in matter at various levels. This article focuses on studies that reveal students’ alternative frameworks for the particulate nature of matter in solids, liquids and gases. Also, I suggest factors that contribute to these alternative frameworks, incorporating my own experiences in developing an understanding of this concept. Finally, …

Enhancing Intrinsic Motivation Through The Use Of A Token Economy, Gess Leblanc Sep 2004

Enhancing Intrinsic Motivation Through The Use Of A Token Economy, Gess Leblanc

Essays in Education

This work will examine the link between intrinsic motivation and external rewards by describing the experiences of twenty-seven academically under-performing adolescents who were enrolled in an after school program in a New York City public junior high school that implemented a token economy. The goals of the implemented token economy were to establish an objective measure of student competence, to enhance student perceptions of their autonomy, and to establish links between their classroom-based learning and its practical “real world” applications. It is argued that by achieving these goals, the token economy serves as a tool for enhancing levels of self-efficacy …

History In The Air, Edward L. Ayers Jul 2004

History In The Air, Edward L. Ayers

History Faculty Publications

The history in the air never seems to settle to the ground. Polls and tests reveal that plenty of young people do not know about their nation's history -- not to mention the history of other nations. Some connection is not being made.

Why School Culture Both Attracts And Resists Whole School Reform Models, Bobbie J. Greenlee, Darlene Y. Bruner Jul 2004

Why School Culture Both Attracts And Resists Whole School Reform Models, Bobbie J. Greenlee, Darlene Y. Bruner

Essays in Education

This paper uses the metaphor of "grafting" to describe the relationship of comprehensive school reform designs to the work culture of schools. One school reform model that has widespread implementation is the Success for All (SFA) reading program. The new practice provided in the SFA reading program offered a compatible "graft" onto the existing culture found in low achieving schools. The grafting on of a new program can only occur as long as its requirements do not stray from the existing traditions of the system. Schools adopt reform programs that offer procedural or curricular changes that fit within their existing …

Two Decades Of Research On The Problem Solving Inventory A Call For Empirical Clarity, Muninder Kaur Ahluwalia, Lisa A. Suzuki May 2004

Two Decades Of Research On The Problem Solving Inventory A Call For Empirical Clarity, Muninder Kaur Ahluwalia, Lisa A. Suzuki

Department of Counseling Scholarship and Creative Works

Heppner, Witty, and Dixon's review of 2 decades of research on the Problem Solving Inventory (PSI) provides highlights of more than 120 studies relating problem-solving appraisal to psychological adjustment, physical health, coping, and educational and vocational issues. Although clearly an impressive body of literature, the level of data reported is uneven with attention to effect sizes (e.g., correlations) and sample descriptors (e.g., race/ethnicity, n size, gender). Acknowledging the importance of the PSI and this major review, we provide commentary on the need for a meta-analysis and the continual expansion of research on the PSI with respect to diversity issues (i.e., …

Attitudes Towards Educational Innovations In Christian High Schools In Northwest Iowa And Southeast South Dakota, Kimberly A. Hengeveld May 2004

Attitudes Towards Educational Innovations In Christian High Schools In Northwest Iowa And Southeast South Dakota, Kimberly A. Hengeveld

Master of Education Program Theses

This study examines the attitudes of Christian high school educators in Northwest Iowa and Southwest South Dakota toward educational innovation and change in secondary education. Faculty and administration rated ten innovations or practices for their value to Christian school secondary systems, their perceptions about which factors and individuals are influential in the decision-making process about affecting change in the secondary school system, and their personal response to change in the classroom. The results indicate that these educators believe that change is important, but they are less supportive of change that might disrupt the way that schools are currently organized. Respondents …

A Study Of Preservice Teachers' Attitudes Toward Human Rights And Unfair Labor Conditions: A Comparison Of The Influence Of Two Teaching Methods, Benicia D'Sa May 2004

A Study Of Preservice Teachers' Attitudes Toward Human Rights And Unfair Labor Conditions: A Comparison Of The Influence Of Two Teaching Methods, Benicia D'Sa

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of preservice teachers towards human rights, particularly about human rights related to labor. To assess their attitudes of human rights and unfair labor conditions, two types of presentations, (a) docudrama and discussion, and (b) lecture and discussion, were conducted. The researcher evaluated these teaching methods on their efficacy in creating an awareness of human-rights violations and labor conditions. Additionally, the participants were exposed to two types of invitations to engage in human-rights advocacy.

The study involved elementary preservice teachers and secondary preservice teachers typically at the junior undergraduate level. There …

The Effect Of Funnix Math On Pre-Kindergarten Student's Achievement In Mathematics, Michelle E. Andreoli

Theses & Honors Papers

It is imperative that mathematics education in the United States be effective and comprehensive in nature. Mathematical skills are a necessary component to functional and independent living. Much debate has aroused over which instructional methodologies to adopt, but the research clearly supports the use of explicit instruction. Direct Instruction is an expository approach to learning, which encompasses critical design principles that enable it to be sequential and thorough. Funnix Math is the newest program, which utilizes this methodology. The present study investigates the efficacy of Funnix Math on the pre-kindergarten population. The results of this study contradict previous research on …

Flexible Reading Groups For Literacy In A First Grade Classroom, Sharon Ann Parker Jan 2004

Flexible Reading Groups For Literacy In A First Grade Classroom, Sharon Ann Parker

All Graduate Projects

The professional literature on the configuration of flexible reading groups for reading instrnction in a regular first grade classroom was examined to determine if flexible grouping yields any benefit to students who have been assessed to be below grade level in reading. The research showed support for the idea that flexible, fluid grouping is an accelerant to producing higher levels of reading improvement. As a result, an instructional handbook was created to aid educators in the implementation of flexible reading group instruction.

Handbook Containing Basic Requirements Of The Implementation And Management Of Parent Partnered Programs, Gregory Wayne Lovercamp Jan 2004

Handbook Containing Basic Requirements Of The Implementation And Management Of Parent Partnered Programs, Gregory Wayne Lovercamp

All Graduate Projects

This project provides school districts with background and resources to implement an alternative school program that involves parent partnership at a high level. Though resembling homeschooling, families involved in these programs in Washington State are emolled as public school students in the sponsoring district. Some homeschoolers tend to view these programs with a wary eye, while participants have found what they consider to be a godsend that enables them to educate their children the way they want with resources made available by the local school district. Applicable requirements are delineated and sample documents to meet those requirements are included.

An Archaeology Of Pain, Dennis Michael Gruber Jan 2004

An Archaeology Of Pain, Dennis Michael Gruber

Legacy ETDs

Pain is a discursive construct of science and medicine. Through the discourses of biopower and technoscience pain is used to construct and maintain the social body. Biopower and technoscience are discursive practices that are enveloped within the disciplines of Western society. Specifically, the disciplines of education, science, and medicine use biopower and technoscience to normalize the body and construct binaries which create the abnormal. The cyborg is a discursive practice used to implode the binaries of the disciplines which maintain the social body. Through the implosion of binaries, the binary of mind/body is no longer plausible in the explanation of …

Beginning Reading Instruction In Massachusetts Public Schools: Research, Policy, And Teachers' Knowledge And Beliefs, Shayne B. Piasta Jan 2004

Beginning Reading Instruction In Massachusetts Public Schools: Research, Policy, And Teachers' Knowledge And Beliefs, Shayne B. Piasta

Fenwick Scholar Program

Research on reading acquisition and instruction has identified the incorporation of an explicit, systematic code-based approach into a comprehensive reading curriculum as most successful in teaching beginning readers, including those who are reading disabled (e.g., Adams, 1990; National Reading Panel, 2000; Pressley, 2002; Rayner, Foorman, Perfetti, Pesetsky, & Seidenberg, 2001). Yet, 70% of 4th grade students nationwide and 60% of such students in Massachusetts are not reading at proficient levels (National Assessment of Educational Progress, 2003), statistics which raise questions about how well the research is translated into educational policies and classroom practices. Over the course of my Fenwick year, …

Students had difficulty understanding and/or visualizing its abstract topics. This course is presently taught using the latest class technologies and its contents are available on the Internet for out of class access.

Journaling As A Teaching And Learning Tool, Delmar Lonowski Jan 2004

Journaling As A Teaching And Learning Tool, Delmar Lonowski

Bush Project Anthology

Requiring students to keep journals is a most valuable teaching and learning tool. Student writing can be more than a way that we justify the grades we give students at the end of each term. Writing is a multi-functional tool that can be used not only for evaluation but also for teaching and learning. In using writing for teaching and learning, we help our students develop analytical, critical thinking, and organizational skills that will help them be successful. Requiring students to keep journals is just such a tool. In addition, it helps achieve the SDSU Lead Forward Goal of making …

Learning By Doing, And Doing What Others Have Done: Study Replication In The Classroom, Meredith Redlin, Mario Hesse

Bush Project Anthology

The study of sociology comprise both theory and method, a combination which has resulted in persistent challenges to pedagogical practice in the lower level undergraduate classroom (Cutler 1987; Takata and Leiting 1987). While teaching of general theory is well-suited to the classroom in the instruction of framework , teaching the application of theory require the introduction of data for those frameworks. Similarly, while specific methods can be outlined in the lecture classroom format common to lower-level coursework, teaching the application of methods remain key to building a solid understanding of the discipline and it practices (Cutler 1987; Van Valey 1977, …

Use Of The Case Study Method To Enhance The Educational Experience For Students, David W. Willis Jan 2004

Use Of The Case Study Method To Enhance The Educational Experience For Students, David W. Willis

Bush Project Anthology

I have always believed in teaching with practical examples. However, I typically have presented these examples to students in a passive manner (i.e., a traditional lecture format). Because I was not pleased with retention of what I considered important material, I searched for a means to improve retention through more active learning while retaining practical examples. Thus, I first learned about the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science (http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/projects/ cases/ case.html) and attended their annual meeting.

A Solution For Non-Proctored Online Tests Using Webct, Gary Aguiar Jan 2004

A Solution For Non-Proctored Online Tests Using Webct, Gary Aguiar

Bush Project Anthology

In developing an Internet-delivered version of my introductory political science course, I found it a challenge to devise online tests that prevented cheating. To the maximum extent possible, I wanted to create an Internet course that mirrored my on-campus course and minimized opportunities to cheat on non-proctored tests using WebCT. Over the last four semesters, I used my on-campus courses to develop online tests in preparation for my first Internet-delivered course. With the advice and support of other faculty and staff, I developed online quizzes and exams using WebCT that support two Lead Forward goals. First, students learn to embrace …

Avoiding Binary Thinking: Using Multiperspectivism As A Classroom Tool, Maria T. Ramos-Garcia Jan 2004

Avoiding Binary Thinking: Using Multiperspectivism As A Classroom Tool, Maria T. Ramos-Garcia

Bush Project Anthology

One of the greatest challenges teachers face in literature classes is encouraging students to go beyond the easy answers. That is especially true when students are studying literature in a second language. In their lower-division classes, they have become accustomed to providing the "right" answer applying the language they are learning. Therefore, when they enter a more advanced language class with a literature focus, they feel cheated when the instructor fails to tell them what the right answer is ... even if the issues involved are extremely complex. Students must learn that most literary works pose questions that have no …

We Change The World By Doing Nothing, Suzanne Soohoo Jan 2004

We Change The World By Doing Nothing, Suzanne Soohoo

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"The focus of this essay is on what I refer to as 'bystander apathy.' Bystanderism is the response of people who observe something that demands intervention on their part, but they choose not to get involved. I write this piece to shed light on this issue for others as well as for my own self-reflection - to understand more deeply why some people act against abuses of power and others don't; why sometimes I act and sometimes I don't. What are the forces, both internal and external, that work to keep us all from speaking against and standing up to …
