The term ‘towards bicultural competence’ in the title of my doctoral thesis: Towards Bicultural Competence: Researching for Personal and Professional Transformations refers to my desire to become competent in negotiating the two cultures (British and African Caribbean) of my dual heritage. The lack of competence which is implied in the title has been a major problem in my personal and professional life and was therefore an important insight thrown up by my research efforts.

The recent battle reported from Washington about proposed national testing program does not tell the most important political story about high stakes tests. Politically popular school accountability systems in many states already revolve around statistical results of testing with high-stakes environments. The future of high stakes tests thus does not depend on what happens on Capitol Hill. Rather, the existence of tests depends largely on the political culture of published test results. O livro é uma coletânea de dezoito documentos que delineiam os conteúdos programáticos ensinados na escola secundaria brasileira de 1850 a 1951. Os documentos correspondem a reformas educacionais efetuadas neste período. Dentre os programas da coletânea, quinze foram elaborados especificamente para o Colégio Pedro II, o no Rio de Janeiro. Os outros três foram expedidos pelo Ministério da Educação para serem implementados em nível nacional. Os programas de estudo contem informações sobre os itens de conteúdos das matérias e sua organização nas series, o numero de lições atribuídas a cada tópico, e referencias a autores e livros textos utilizados. Ziel dieses Beitrages ist es, ein Projekt der am Institut für Didaktik der Mathematik (IDM) in Bielefeld beheimateten Arbeitsgruppe Erkenntnistheoretische und semiotische Grundlagen des Mathematik-Lernens vorzustellen und in eine bestimmte Richtung mathematikdidaktischer Forschung einzuordnen, wie sie von Michael Otte vertreten wird, dem Leiter der genannten Arbeitsgruppe. Dabei geht es insbesondere um mögliche Beziehungen zwischen Philosophie und Mathematik-Didaktik.

Various federal and state statutes in the United States define the role of the court interpreter with clear and unequivocal rules. This definition is based on the underlying principles of the U.S. legal system, which is derived from the Anglo-Saxon common-law tradition. Consequently, the distinctive features of that system, including the jury trial and the concept of adversarial proceedings, make the function of the court interpreter quite different from that of his/her counterparts in other countries. In recent years, the judiciary has made an effort to enhance the public's access to the justice system, but at the same time, the …
