The Effects Of Financial Aid On College Student Persistence, John Paul Wageman Jan 1994

The Effects Of Financial Aid On College Student Persistence, John Paul Wageman

Graduate Research Papers

Student enrollment is of paramount importance to most colleges' and universities' financial stability, particularly private institutions which rely heavily on tuition revenue. Some colleges and universities have invested in costly recruitment strategies to increase enrollment. Many institutions, however, view student retention as the most cost-effective means of stabilizing enrollment (Moline, 1987; Tinto, 1987). Student retention is an obvious goal for all institutions of higher education.

A Vision Of Middle School Leadership, Steven J. Kwikkel

Graduate Research Papers

I take a moment to look at my watch and everything seems right on schedule. It's 7:59 a.m. and the date is August 25, 1994, the first day of teacher workshops! A letter sent out three weeks ago to the 14 faculty and four staff members I will be working with assures me that all will be present for our first formal building meeting. Materials I had prepared during the months of June and July to prepare for the upcoming year are sitting ready to be picked up by what I have been told is one of the most "dynamic" …

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder And The Vietnam Veteran: Indentification Of Symptomatology For The Mental Health Professional, Jo Ellen C. Kubik Jan 1994

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder And The Vietnam Veteran: Indentification Of Symptomatology For The Mental Health Professional, Jo Ellen C. Kubik

Graduate Research Papers

The war in Vietnam has left enormous emotional scars on America (Goderez, 1987). One facet of this tragedy is the fact that there are more than 500,000 Vietnam Veterans who are suffering delayed war stress (Goodwin, 1980). These veterans experience bad dreams, insomnia, uncontrollable anxiety, and depression. Often they are tormented with flashbacks. Many are afflicted by drug and/or alcohol addictions. Collectively, these stresses contribute to the fact that the Vietnam veteran's risk of suicide is 23% greater than is true for the general American population (Blair & Hildreth, 1991; Goodwin, 1980; Shore, 1986).

A Personal Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Bonnie Lenz Jan 1994

A Personal Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Bonnie Lenz

Graduate Research Papers

To develop a vision for administration of the elementary school, one must first articulate one's vision for the school itself. In considering the role I might take as a principal, I must begin by questioning the school's purpose, structure and direction. Sergiovanni (1992) advanced the view that schools exist for a purpose, and leadership behaviors or organizational structures that do not enhance that purpose are ineffective and meaningless. Our purpose is to educate students. Does the school's structure support and its leadership point in the direction of offering the best possible education to all children?

The Value Of Therapeutic Massage/Touch In Promoting Physical And Mental Health, Carmen Schreiber Huber Jan 1994

The Value Of Therapeutic Massage/Touch In Promoting Physical And Mental Health, Carmen Schreiber Huber

Graduate Research Papers

Humans have relied on their five senses--sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell--for purposes of communication within their environment. The most crucial of all the senses is that of touch. Touch is a basic human need and is the first form of communication humans experience (Jones, 1994). According to Colton (1983), touching is necessary throughout the lifespan. As humans mature, their reaching and touching needs change. Infants and 1 children progress from relying on their parents to being more independent and self-sufficient. The process of maturation is an important component to personal growth and development and manifests different touch needs. Buscaglia …

Campus Community: Linking Student Affairs And The Professoriate, Jeffrey Loy Josua Mitchell Jan 1994

Campus Community: Linking Student Affairs And The Professoriate, Jeffrey Loy Josua Mitchell

Graduate Research Papers

The term community has many definitions and is used to describe a broad range of groups, events, and relationships that exist in different forms, at different degrees of development and maturity, and with differing values and expectations. It is used to describe towns and neighborhoods, groups, and relationships. Most college campuses view the larger community as a group of smaller communities such as, fraternities and sororities, cultural and ethnic populations, sporting events, and gatherings for special celebrations. Some higher education communities exist at a very superficial level and some have great depth and commitment. Some make new members work to …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Jodi S. Dorn

Graduate Research Papers

Education in America is changing. This paper will explore the role an administrator plays in developing a shared vision, empowerment, school-community relations, staff development, the hiring process, and in dealing with social problems.· "All principals are instructional leaders, since all principals inevitably influence what students have an opportunity to do in the classroom" (Donmoyer, 1990, p. 27). Administrators should be the facilitators of teachers. It is important to be the kind of principal that teachers can trust to implement changes. A principal's purpose is to nurture and develop better teachers. A critical part of the job is to help all …

Therapeutic Implications Of Parental Bereavement, Tracey R. Bishop Jan 1994

Therapeutic Implications Of Parental Bereavement, Tracey R. Bishop

Graduate Research Papers

The loss of a loved one is a tragedy disproportionate from any other for many people. Most individuals experience the pain from losing someone very important to them during their lifetimes. Because of the large number of people it affects, the intensity of the loss experience, and the systematic variations with which its consequences are distributed across populations, bereavement has far-reaching implications (Stroebe, Stroebe, & Hansson, 1993). Due to this inevitable fact, many mental health care professionals have shown an increased interest in death and dying issues over the past 20 years (McClowry, Davies, May, Kulenkamp, & Martinson, 1987; Rando, …

Group Therapy For Bulimics: Implications For School Counselors, Kelly Ann Clark Jan 1994

Group Therapy For Bulimics: Implications For School Counselors, Kelly Ann Clark

Graduate Research Papers

" Although our society has become increasingly preoccupied with eating and weight, it is only relatively recently that publicity has been given to eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia" (Hendrick, 1985, p. 275). For purposes of this paper, the author is only going to deal with bulimia. Bulimia has primarily been a concern among college-age women, but over the past decade the prevalence of the disorder has increased dramatically among adolescent females (Omizo & Omizo, 1992). The increasing incidence of bulimia warrants concern for those professionals working with adolescents, such as school counselors and therapists in private practice …

Selected Factors Contributing To Major Depression In Women, Jewel E. Cooper Jan 1994

Selected Factors Contributing To Major Depression In Women, Jewel E. Cooper

Graduate Research Papers

An estimated 10 million Americans suffer from depression of one sort or another at a cost of some $27 billion a year in loss of work productivity, permanent disability, depression related alcohol and drug abuse, and the actual costs of treatment (Rovner, 1992). But Americans are ill at ease, ill-prepared and ill-informed about how to deal with depression. According to Rovner, a survey by the National Institute of Mental Health found that more than half of those polled believe depression may be linked to personal or emotional weakness.

The responsibilities of a principal are limitless; ranging from teacher evaluations to student discipline and from building maintenance to school budgets. A principal is not only responsible for his/her own actions, but is responsible and held accountable for the conduct of all teachers, support staff and maintenance personnel that are under his/her supervision. School administration must be one of the most challenging careers that one can persue [sic]. Presently the occupation of a school principal is moving through a transformational period based on research that advocates a style of leadership that better suits and can better serve the complex, everchanging …

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to better understand the effect of the college union physical environment upon informal social interaction. The application of such knowledge may enable college union practitioners to design college union physical settings that enhance, rather than impede, student-faculty and peer informal interaction. This paper briefly presents pertinent research concerning the outcomes associated with student-faculty and peer interaction. Relevant person-environment interaction and physical-environmental models are examined. The social relationship between architecture and human interaction behavior is addressed, as well as the consequential affect of interior seating and furniture arrangements on informal interaction. The ambient environment which …

What Is An Effective Leader?: A Reflective Essay, Diane M. Fisken Jan 1994

What Is An Effective Leader?: A Reflective Essay, Diane M. Fisken

Graduate Research Papers

What is leadership? Wiles & Bondi (1986) describe leadership in the following way: Leadership is an approach, a way of working with people within an organization to accomplish a task. Persons in supervisory roles must understand the conditions of an organization, possess a vision of what can be done to improve that organization, and interlock the behaviors of others with that organization's structure. (p.26) In their studies, Hersey & Blanchard (1976) have found that: Over the last few decades, people in the field of management have been involved in a search for a "best" style of leadership. Yet, the evidence …

A Vision For Leadership In The Elementary School: A Reflective Essay, Margaret L. Frey Jan 1994

A Vision For Leadership In The Elementary School: A Reflective Essay, Margaret L. Frey

Graduate Research Papers

As I sat anxiously waiting for the interview with the personnel director, I found my mind going through a mental checklist. I had carefully selected a navy blue "power suit" that was simple, yet professional. My hair, nails and make-up were done with discretion. The jewelry I had selected complimented the suit. I definitely emulated the "look" of a professional. But the "look" wasn't nearly as important as the values that I believed so strongly in--the values that brought me here.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Schools: A Reflective Essay, Joseph F. Deutsch

Graduate Research Papers

My first encounter with the prospect of becoming a principal happened quite by chance in the spring of 1988, during a post-evaluation conference with my principal. After our formal discussion, we talked about the future. He commented to me that I should go to graduate school and enter the principalship. I immediately laughed his suggestion off, first by making light of principals in general, then letting him know that I could not imagine myself sitting in the principal's chair. He ended our conversation by mentioning why I would be right for the principalship and to give his suggestion serious consideration. …

Patterns Of Self-Esteem In Adolescent Girls, Carol Hedberg Jan 1994

Patterns Of Self-Esteem In Adolescent Girls, Carol Hedberg

Graduate Research Papers

Research on adolescent females suggests that many factors contribute to their self-esteem (Coopersmith, 1967; Gilligan, Brown, & Rogers, 1990; Rosenberg, 1965). According to this research, certain factors can dramatically affect females' self-esteem scores (Coopersmith, 1967; Gilligan et al., 1990; Greenberg-Lake, 1992; Rosenberg, 1965). These characteristics include the developmental stage of adolescence (Coopersmith, 1967), relationships with peers and adults (Rosenberg, 1965), gender identity and moral development (Gilligan, et al., 1990), and, finally, school success (Coopersmith & Feldman, 1974). The recent research on gender identity (Gilligan et al., 1990; Greenberg-Lake, 1992; Miller, 1986), however, seems to point to a difficulty that adolescent …

Humanistic Art Therapy Techniques, Richard J. Hemann Jan 1994

Humanistic Art Therapy Techniques, Richard J. Hemann

Graduate Research Papers

Because verbalization is our primary mode of communication we are more adept at manipulating and more facile in saying what we want to say and refraining from saying what we don't want to say than through other communicative modes. Art is a less customary communicative vehicle for most people and therefore less amenable to control. Unexpected things may burst forth in a 1 picture ••• sometimes totally contrary to the intentions of its creator. This is one of the most exciting potentialities in art therapy. Unexpected recognitions often form the leading edge of insight, learning, and growth. (Cook, 1991, p. …

Imagine, for example, that you are an individual who is blind. You want to attend a class but cannot read the syllabus. Or you are deaf and cannot hear your instructor's voice. People with disabilities have been confronted with these barriers for years when they have tried to participate in our educational system. Now, however, there is legislation that has been passed to tear down these barriers. On July 26, 1990, President Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law. This act protects individuals with physical, mental, or emotional disabilities (Beziat, 1990) and will have direct impact on …

How it all began ...

July 31, 1991 (8:30 PM) 1 After a long and busy day, the phone rings. It is Kathi, a friend of mine, calling to see if I had a teaching job for the upcoming school year. Kathi had recently visited with a former colleague who was concerned that her school would not have a principal for the new school year. The principal of this small parochial school 25 miles from Storm Lake had just resigned to take another principalship in Eastern Iowa. Kathi had talked to the priest/superintendent and had mentioned my name. He requested …

The Secondary Principalship: The Philosophy Of Educational Administration: A Reflective Paper, Palmer Byrd Ii

Graduate Research Papers

Over the last forty years, education in the United States has undergone several changes. In the 1950's the understood focus of secondary public education was college preparation for those few students who could afford the advances of a higher education. Most high school students did not expect to, and did not go on to college or to the university. During and after the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's, the federal and state governments seriously began to look at the question of equal opportunity in public school education. In the aftermath of the social upheaval of the Civil Rights Movement, …

Through the years these experiences have helped me continue to learn and grow as a classroom facilitator. I am now at a crossroads of professional growth and have determined a potential change …

Perceptions Of Cultural Diversity Within Social Fraternities And Sororities, Sarah L. Mcdonald Jan 1994

Perceptions Of Cultural Diversity Within Social Fraternities And Sororities, Sarah L. Mcdonald

Graduate Research Papers

Social fraternities and sororities have frequently been the targets of public criticism. One of the reasons for this criticism is the belief that social fraternities and sororities promote racism (Goettsch & Hayes, 1990). In this paper, perceptions of cultural diversity within social fraternities and sororities are examined. The focus is primarily on perceptions of sorority and fraternity members toward African-Americans. The first section will present an historical overview of social fraternities and sororities. Next, attitudes regarding racial prejudice in social fraternities and sororities is reviewed. The paper concludes with recommendations based on the research presented in the previous section.
