The purpose of this Major Applied Research Project was to investigate the weaknesses in post-secondary mathematics problem solving and to develop an instructional design that would help mathematics majors become better problem solvers. A case study was conducted including an extensive literary search to determine which strategies were needed to enhance problem solving. Three basic research restrictions were examined: 1. As a ministry of Shenandoah Baptist Church, Roanoke Valley Christian Schools (RVCS), grew since its founding in 1973 to a size of 535 students (K-12) and 31 teachers. The administrative team consisted of the administrator, elementary principal, secondary principal, and part-time learning disability director. RVCS reached a plateau in its growth pattern as seen in enrollment statistics that showed a difference of no more than 18 students during any one year from the 1983-88 mean enrollment of 535. The Army Education Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, has enrolled a large number of soldiers who are academically deficient in reading and mathematical skills in the Basic Skills Education Program (BSEP). Although a verbal courses of the BSEP are offered at Fort Bragg during the yeas, a great number of students is not raise their initial general technical scores (GT) to the minimum acceptable level of 100, and many students do not even complete the course. After reviewing the needs assessment, the faculty determined that the present curriculum did not address many of the skills that employers listed as being important to their businesses. The present curriculum has a highly advanced word processing course as the final course in the curriculum. From 1986 to 1989 Alice Drive Middle School was one of the lowest among nine schools in Sumter School District 17 in average daily attendance. The problem was documented each year in a report issued by the District Attendance Supervisor to the members of the school board and to the South Carolina State Department of Education. This applied research practicum describes a program for improving reading achievement for a target group of students in grades two through five in a small public elementary school in a southeastern rural community. Problems originally noted includes students reading below grade level, and low test scores on the California Achievement Test as compared to system, state and national scores. This proposal describes a series of planned strategies comprising a home-school learning program to facilitate preparation for increased student achievement in grades kindergarten through fifth on the district testing instrument the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. During the spring of the 1988-89 school year, all 115 fourth-grade students at China Grove Elementary School were given the American Alliance Physical Fitness Test. The students were also given blood-cholesterol screening and blood-pressure tests. The tests were given because of concern by faculty members anu school administrators that the students were physically unfit and this may be affecting academic performance. Formal interviews were conducted with all 115 target group members during the 1988-89 school year. Health and exercise practices by students and parents were discussed. This report describes an intervention in the implementation of strategies for group decision making by two committees in a secondary school. Teacher unrest with the decision-making process existed at this school as measured by responses on a school wide self-evaluation tool. questionnaires, comments made in meetings, interviews, letters end the faculty successfully petitioning to rescind a decision that had been made by a committee. Flint River Academy is a private, independent school with enrolled of 410 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. This major research project describes a program that was designed to raise the Verbs’ Scholastic Aptitude Scores of seniors in high school. Students at Flint River Academy consistently scored below the national mean verbal score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. The writer documented this disparity for the 1982-89 school years. The State of Florida requires that all sixty-seven counties within the state participate in a Summer Inservice Institute Program (SIIP) that provides content area instruction to elementary and secondary public school teachers. Critical need areas such as mathematics and science take priority in the consideration for funding and programming in all counties. This report describes a plan for implementing appropriate developmental mathematics practices in the primary grades so that assessment of student needs and knowledge correlated with state required assessment procedures. A large percentage of students beginning at the third grade level had been scoring at or below the national norm on the mathematics portion of the California Achievement Test and had consistently made lower report card grades beginning at the third grade level. This report describes a plan to develop and implement a differentiated pay plan for certified employees in Union County. Certified employees were being paid on a salary schedule which recognized experience and earned degrees only as documented by a review of state salary schedules. A second thrust of the MARP involved using the differentiated pay plan to improve student performance in the 30 indicator areas identified in school improvement plans.
