If the appearance of tree trunk cross-sections symbolically tell the tree's life story, why not use these woody models to help your students construct their own arboreous autobiographies? The color, thickness, and ring pattern of each year in their lives could be drawn with Logo Writer, and then shared and compared with those of classmates to see if any patterns emerge. Similar tree-ring histories for schools, historical figures, literary characters, or countries could also be created.

A selection of quotes shared because of their relevancy to the "Logo Philosophy". As their author listings will indicate, they originate from the common base of human experience from which Logo itself sprang, along with many other calls for reform in education throughout history.

Now that Logo, LogoWriter, and Logo Plus are common to intermediate-level classrooms, handwriting can be explored in a divergent way: as a vehicle through which to explore arc radii and degree measurement. If students are encouraged to examine cursive letter construction in detail and form a new perspective, their handwriting may improve by default.

Hinky Pinky puzzles can be used to help students explore new vocabulary, synonyms, syllabication, and rhyming patterns. Hinky Pinky is an excellent piece of educational software, but Logo can also be used to inspire some fascinating inductive work with Hinky Pinkies.

We are all familiar with the facilitative effects of kinesthetic experiences of abstract concepts for learners. Encouraging children to "play turtle" as an integral part of the Logo graphics problem solving process is probably a well-established part of your "facilitator's repertoire" by now. Why not capitalize upon this symbiotic relationship between cognitive and physical activity?

Young children are natural pattern-makers. Their fascination and facility with rap music, jump rope rhymes, percussive rhythms, and foreign language, for example, attest to innate interests in and abilities to detect, understand, and reproduce patterns in different contexts. If children are natural pattern-makers, then, according to G.H. Hardy (and Seymour Papert, the "father of the Logo turtle"), they are also natural mathematicians.

As the winter holidays approach in many parts of the world, buildings, trees, windowsills, mantelpieces, sidewalks, and street curbs become luminiferous. This, of course, is not a naturally occurring phenomenon. Neighbors align equidistant paper bag luminaries along streets and walks. Hanukkah menorahs are lit with candles for eight nights. Gardeners trace the branches of their favorite tree with strings of lights. And, of course, Christmas celebrants often line their roofs, windows, and doors with multicolored electric bulbs. Inherent in this luminating decorations are motivating mathematical lessons on perimeter and area.
