As apparent from the title of my remarks, I am an outsider to this organization. I teach folklore courses at UCLA, which is one of five institutions in North America offering both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in the study of folklore. I have been asked to speak in this session, in part because I give courses on folk art, aesthetics, fieldwork, and organizational culture and symbolism.
