Assessment Of Judgmental Prior Distributions In The Bayesian Inferential Process, Hoi K. Suen, Robert A. Karabinus Jan 1986

Assessment Of Judgmental Prior Distributions In The Bayesian Inferential Process, Hoi K. Suen, Robert A. Karabinus

Mid-Western Educational Researcher (1981 - 1987)

This study compared the accuracies of the t-distribution method suggested by Suen (1983, 1984) with the natural conjugate distribution (NCD) method in combining subjective distributions to form a single joint prior that, when combined with empirical data, generated the most accurate estimate of the actual mean values. It was found that the t-distribution process yielded more accurate posterior information than the NCD process.

The Effect Of Content Mapping Upon Memory For Main Ideas, Peter C. Murrell Jr. Jan 1986

The Effect Of Content Mapping Upon Memory For Main Ideas, Peter C. Murrell Jr.

Mid-Western Educational Researcher (1981 - 1987)

Text mapping is a learning strategy in which textual material is transformed into a spatial-pictorial representation--one that expresses concepts and the relations between them. The present study addressed a variant of text mapping, termed content mapping, which combined text material with instructional content. It was hypothesized that the use of content mapping as a learning strategy would enhance the long-term recall of main ideas. Subjects were exposed to content map models in the context of classroom instruction, and later were asked to free recall information from the map-relevant topic. The memory performance of "mappers" was superior to that of "nonmappers" …

Teacher Education Reform, Anthony J. White, David E. Suddick Jan 1986

Teacher Education Reform, Anthony J. White, David E. Suddick

Mid-Western Educational Researcher (1981 - 1987)

Teacher education reform has been the focus of inquiry for many years (Joyce & Clift, 1984). However, a study entitled A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform, published by the National Commission on Excellence (1983), led to literally hundreds of conferences and institutes in 1983 and 1984 (Gardner, 1984). A general consensus that reformation of teacher education is long overdue exists in professional literature. Yet very little agreement exists as to the specifics of the agenda. For example, consider the position set forth by Joyce and Clift (1984), which was commented upon by Imig (1984) and then countered …

Identifying The Study Behavior Of College Students With A 46-Item Inventory, Richard J. Mueller, Anthony S. Feiza Jan 1986

Identifying The Study Behavior Of College Students With A 46-Item Inventory, Richard J. Mueller, Anthony S. Feiza

Mid-Western Educational Researcher (1981 - 1987)

Educational researchers and the public alike are developing a strong interest in the subject of study skills. "Metacognition"--the understanding and control of one's own learning strategies--is emerging as a prominent part of the study of cognition. Researchers are focusing on the total age range of the metacognitive process, from "metamemory" and "metalanguage" processes that begin around the age of 5, all the way to the measurement of specific study behaviors and attitudes of mature adults who have returned to school for academic or vocational enrichment (DiVesta, 1982). For the first time, the Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors (1984) lists "metacognition" as …
