The authors briefly describe the use of multidimensional scaling (MDS) in counseling. They discuss types of data that have been analyzed using MDS, kinds of MDS, analyses, and the interpretation of MDS results and review MDS research relevant to vocational, family, group, and individual counseling. They also briefly discuss potential applications in counseling practice.

Retention, Grade Point Average & Client Satisfaction Of Professionally Counseled Freshmen & Peer Counseled Freshmen, Anne Murray

Samples from two populations, entering freshmen at Western Kentucky University who were either peer counseled/advised or professionally counseled/advised, were compared on three vairables: (i) retention rate as sophomores, (2) freshman grade point averages earned. and (3) client satisfaction with counseling/advisement services.

The variance between the means of the two freshmen groups was analyzed using a two tailed t test. There was no significant difference between groups in retention or grade point average. There was, however, significant difference in client satisfaction between the peer counseled/advised freshmen and the professionally counseled/advised freshmen. Freshmen receiving peer counseling/advisement rated their helpers at a higher …

The Problem. The purpose of this study was to measure discrepancies between perceived "importance", "attainment" and "effectiveness" of school counselor role and function behaviors as viewed by principals, counselors, and teachers. It was hypothesized that counselors, teachers, and principals will differ significantly in their perceptions of what is important, attained and effective in counselor role and function.;Research Procedure. The subjects (N = 687) were principals, counselors and teachers randomly selected from Virginia public secondary schools. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a problem-solving intervention strategy as applied to mildly suicidal adolescents. The population for this study consisted of male and female adolescents aged 14 to 19 who were referred by teachers, counselors, parents or self because of concerns about suicidal behavior. This project was a case study approach focusing on six mildly suicidal adolescents who volunteered from a pool of referrals received during the 1985-1986 school year. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the significance of some contextual factors suspected of having the capacity to influence the availability, content, and affective tone of recollections. One hundred and eight young adult volunteer subjects were each asked to recall six cued recent or early childhood memories. Recall latencies were noted as well as scores indicating the degree of pleasure Ss attributed to their recollections at the time of their recall and the degree of pleasure they recall having attributed to the incidents at the time they occurred. Problem. The purpose of this study was to detemine if the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory (SCII) is a valid instrument for measuring the vocational interests of Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) seminarians and ministers and to discover if denominational differences exist on the SCII. Another purpose of the study was to determine if preferred type of ministry is related to vocational interests.

Method. The SCII and questionnaire were administered to randomly selected SDA seminarians and ministers. The data-producing sample consisted of 75 seminarians and 189 ministers. Statistical analyses included Hotelling's T test, t-tests, univariate and multivariate analyses of variance, and discriminant analysis.

This study compared the effectiveness of two structured small-group counseling techniques, Peer Counseling and Achievement Motivation Training, on the school attendance and academic achievement of underachieving alternative high school students. It also investigated whether participation in daily counseling sessions over a six-week period positively effected measures of self-concept, locus of control, and tendency to achieve.;Experimental subjects were 81 high school students in grades nine through twelve in a public open alternative high school. This study took place in public high schools in east central Illinois. The subjects studied consisted of 13 school counselors who were using Individualized Career Plans in their respective high schools. All of these counselors had received a mini grant from the Career Guidance Center, Region 9, Lake Land College, Mattoon, Illinois.

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceived quality of education and the employment expectations of the 1985 graduates of Fountain Central High School and to gather current statistics on those graduates. Subjects comprised 103 graduates of a rural, west central Indiana public high school. The graduates were administered a survey to determine opinions and perceptions of education received, to determine whether they were employed or continuing their education, and to determine what trends may be developing or maintained.

Adult students over the age of 25 have comprised a significant proportion of student body in traditionally youth-oriented institutions of higher education. At Eastern, adult students comprised 7.2 percent of the population of undergraduate students in the Fall, 1986. Based on an institutional survey, this study attempted to gain a deeper understanding about adult students' academic and personal experiences of returning to a four-year university.

More than one-third of all entering freshmen will not be continuous students into a sophomore year. Academic and orientation interventions usually are based on the assumption that students will self-identify their needs and seek help.
