The Essential Process In A Family Of Measurement Models, Geoff Masters, Benjamin Wright
The Essential Process In A Family Of Measurement Models, Geoff Masters, Benjamin Wright
Prof Geoff Masters AO
Five members of the Rasch family of latent trait models which have appeared more or less independently in the literature are brought together and identified as one model. In addition to sharing the distinguishing characteristic of the dichotomous Rasch model separable person and item parameters and hence sufficient statistics all five models share a common algebraic form and have as their basic element the fundamental process defined by Rasch's simple logistic expression. In these models, the sufficient statistics for person and item parameters are counts of events constructed to be indicative of the variable being measured, and the measures they …

The Costs Of Recurrent Education, Phil Mckenzie
The Costs Of Recurrent Education, Phil Mckenzie
Dr Phillip McKenzie
This paper addresses the subject of the likely costs of a particular form of recurrent education in the context of prospective movements in expenditure on conventional school and tertiary education activities. Data on projected enrolments and likely per student expenditure levels in these sectors lead to the conclusion that expenditure on school and tertiary education is likely to decline as a proportion of gross domestic product (GDP) over the next decade. The magnitude of this prospective decline is compared with the likely costs of a scheme which would enable significant numbers of workforce members to engage in recurrent periods of …

Estabilidade Temporal Do Currículo Da Escola Secundária Brasileira: 1838-1971 [Temporal Stability Of The Curriculum Of The Brazilian Secondary School: 1838-1971], Karl M. Lorenz, Ariclê Vechia
Karl M Lorenz
The paper describes a model for quantitatively analyzing the variability in the duration of an officially implemented school curriculum. It presents baseline data that indicates the “Temporal Stability” of the curricula of the Brazilian secondary school for the period …

The study shows that in nineteen Brazilian secondary school curricula adopted during the years 1838-1942, there was a significant negative correlation between the proportion of hourly teaching loads assigned to science and humanities studies. The results support the contention that the importance attributed …
An Approach To Colleague Evaluation Of Classroom Instruction, Mary Deane Sorcinelli
An Approach To Colleague Evaluation Of Classroom Instruction, Mary Deane Sorcinelli
Mary Deane Sorcinelli
Academic institutions across the country are becoming increasingly interested in involving colleagues in the assessment of classroom teaching. This article will assist instructional developers who consult with faculty members and their departments in an effort to improve and evaluate teaching performance. It briefly reviews the literature on colleague evaluation of classroom teaching, discusses the issues developers should consider when assisting in the design of colleague visitation programs, and suggests guidelines for instituting such programs.
Measuring Attitude To School With A Latent Trait Model, Geoff Masters, N Hyde
Measuring Attitude To School With A Latent Trait Model, Geoff Masters, N Hyde
Prof Geoff Masters AO
A latent trait model for rating scales is used to ana lyze responses to an attitude-to-school questionnaire as part of an evaluation of projects operating in 10 West ern Australian schools under the Australian Priority Schools Program. The invariance of item parameter estimates over the 10 schools is examined, and varia tions in item estimates from school to school are stud ied in the light of the different projects operating in these schools. Results show how the investigation of items that do not retain their difficulties from group to group can provide valuable insight into the ways in which calibration …
Dicot: Analysing Classroom Tests With The Rasch Model, Geoff Masters
Dicot: Analysing Classroom Tests With The Rasch Model, Geoff Masters
Prof Geoff Masters AO
A computer program (DICOT) for the Rasch analysis of classroom tests is described. Results are presented in a simple, self-explanatory form, and person ability and item difficulty estimates are expressed in a metric like the one with which teachers and parents are already familiar. Person and item fit statistics provide an opportunity to diagnose strengths and weaknesses of individual children and to identify items which are problematic.

Constructing An Item Bank Using Partial Credit Scoring, Geoff Masters
Constructing An Item Bank Using Partial Credit Scoring, Geoff Masters
Prof Geoff Masters AO
A method for banking test items scored in several ordered response categories is described. Each item is seen as an ordered sequence of steps, and test forms are equated using the estimated difficulties of the steps in their shared items. Procedures for analyzing the internal consistency of individual links and for analyzing the coherence of an entire linking structure are described. The methodology is used to link six forms of a mathematics problem solving test.

Juvenile Delinquency And Reformatory Education In Chinese Society, Irving Epstein

This study analyzes juvenile delinquency and reformatory education issues in the People's Republic of China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. For each case, the literature concerning juvenile delinquency is reviewed and specific institutional policies are discussed. The evidence presented in the study is based upon primary and secondary source documentation, as well as field work and interviews conducted in each region in 1992 and 1983. The study’s three hypotheses argue that stigma is conferred upon both offenders and their family members, institutional policies can be categorized as non-rational when one compares stated goals with observable polices, and that formal educational organizations …

Consensus Moderation Observed, Lawrence Ingvarson
Dr Lawrence Ingvarson (Consultant)
This paper reports the findings of a three-year evaluation study of consensus moderation procedures as applied to the school-assessed component in H.S.C. Geography in Victoria. Since 1981, Group 1 subjects in the assessment program of the Victorian Institute of Secondary Education (V.I.S.E.) at Year 12 level have included a school-assessed component in addition to an external examination. For most subjects, the method of moderating the school-assessed component is by statistical moderation. Moderation by visitation and consensus moderation are the two other methods currently used in Victoria. As V.I.S.E. is proposing to extend the number of subjects for which consensus moderation …
