A Survey Of The Public High School Commercial Departments In The State Of Washington, Ralph Vernon Thomas

The purpose of this study was to survey the commercial curriculum of the high schools of the State of Washington. Of particular emphasis was (1) the number of high school commercial teachers employed; (2) commercial subjects offered, grade level at which offered, and total semesters offered; (3) the availability of business machines; (4) commercial courses least needed, and (5) commercial course subjects that could be added. This survey reveals the common characteristics of the commercial departments of the high schools at this time.

The majority of music supervisors in the public schools examined in the study said that the classroom teacher should teach music in her classroom from the grade level of kindergarten through fourth grade. This study was concerned with ways to improve the thinking of upper elementary school children. An attempt was made to analyze classroom situations which do and do not help children learn to think, and to make suggestions for developing skills in thinking. Criteria were developed by the writer and were presented to upper elementary classroom teachers to help them evaluate themselves in teaching children to think. This problem was the study of how classroom teachers can teach children to think better.

Since the Massachusetts Compulsory Education Law of 1642, the nature of the public secondary school student body has undergone .widespread changes. Public education has broadened its base to include all educable students of school age.

Attendance problems seemed to have increased with compulsory education. In the past, assumptions based upon limited observation have been drawn by educators concerning the individual students who constitute this attendance problem group. Since no specific study of attendance conditions existed for the Kern County Union High School District, this investigation has undertaken to meet that need.
