Problems Of Hawaiian Adolescence, Ruth E. Fitch Jan 1941

Problems Of Hawaiian Adolescence, Ruth E. Fitch

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A discussion of problems of Hawaiian adolescence must necessarily be a broad study. This thesis offers a comprehensive view of the life of the Hawaiian child and the factors that influence him, but it does not go extensively into the biological phases. The limits of this study embrace rather a discussion of the composite structure of the Hawaiian child with special reference to the racial distribution. The home life and education of Hawaiian adolescents are also examined.

Group Guidance In The Junior High School With Particular Reference To A Course Developed At The Sutter Junior High School In Sacramento, California, And An Evaluation Of Its Results, May D. Sturges Jan 1941

Group Guidance In The Junior High School With Particular Reference To A Course Developed At The Sutter Junior High School In Sacramento, California, And An Evaluation Of Its Results, May D. Sturges

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The following study is an attempt to discover some of the possible values that may have come to certain groups as a result of a short guidance course given to ninth grade Junior High students. Many studies will need to be made in this field if the real values are to be determined. After all, there are so many guidance factors that enter into the life of the average Junior High student, it is difficult to say with assurance, "this is the direct influence of a particular course."

We can only hope that the more subtle and often the more …

A Problem In Curriculum Construction : A Syllabus For The Teaching Of California History, Inez Irene Clark Jan 1941

A Problem In Curriculum Construction : A Syllabus For The Teaching Of California History, Inez Irene Clark

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This thesis represents the close personal interest of the writer, one on which she has been reading for six years. The tragic events of the past three years have intensified the belief that if democracy ever overcomes the various "isms" which plague the world it will be because youth, through the schools, has become familiar with the ideals which have democracy birth and has developed a deep appreciation of the labor which enabled it to grow and flower. For this, a knowledge of the history of our country is not enough. Youth must know present problems and have the courage …

Health Education In The Public Schools Of Hawaii, Thelma F. Atkins Jan 1941

Health Education In The Public Schools Of Hawaii, Thelma F. Atkins

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will trace the major developments in the field of health education in the public schools or the Territory of Hawaii from the beginnings made in 1009 to the present time. Some attention will be paid to developments on the Islands or Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai; but the greater emphasis will be placed on the work done on the Island of Oahu.

The public schools of the Territory of Hawaii are at present carrying on an extensive health program. The special health class work seems to be receiving more attention in the non-English standard schools. The need is more …

A Critical Evaluation Of The Music Curriculum In Representative High Schools Of California, Oregon And Washington And A Suggested Program Based Upon The Possibilities Of Post School Musical Activities, James Atkinson Lewis Jan 1941

A Critical Evaluation Of The Music Curriculum In Representative High Schools Of California, Oregon And Washington And A Suggested Program Based Upon The Possibilities Of Post School Musical Activities, James Atkinson Lewis

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

"Music for every child. Every child tor Music." How many time have we heard that? Fundamentally, however, it does not go deeply enough into the objectives and purpose of music in the schools today. Every conceivable kind of music is being used in modern schools, and every type of ensemble group is singing or playing this music.

Are the schools creating the best possible music environment for the students? Are the students receiving from their music classes the maximum of increases in social competency, which is, after all, the most important objective of all education? Should small ensemble groups both …

Lodi Recreation Survey, Ralph B. Francis Jan 1941

Lodi Recreation Survey, Ralph B. Francis

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of this study to make a complete recreation survey of Lodi with the idea of determining the need for a community sponsored recreation program. Lodi as a community is anxious to develop the welfare of its citizens. With the advancement and betterment of the community in mind, the results of this report are to be studied, checked, and acted upon by all groups interested in a community recreation program. For the purpose of clarification, recreation will be treated as leisure-time activity as for most people the opportunities for it are largely confined to their leisure hours. …

A Semester Course In Motor Safety For California High Schools, Beverly Crocker Barron Jan 1941

A Semester Course In Motor Safety For California High Schools, Beverly Crocker Barron

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The need for developing proper habits, attitudes, and skills on the part of motorists is being continually and convincingly impressed on the public mind by the tremendous daily accident toll. Great strides have been made in engineering, both with respect to the construction of motor vehicles and the construction of highways. Traffic law enforcement agencies have become increasingly effective in recent years. Both good engineering and proper law enforcement are necessary, but to secure a very appreciable reduction in traffic accidents authorities are agreed that there must be an effective driver-education program. There have been many analysis of the causes …

The Development Of A Better Understanding By The Child Of His Natural Environmental Resources In The Rural Elementary Schools Of Sacramento County, California, Orville James Sipe Jan 1941

The Development Of A Better Understanding By The Child Of His Natural Environmental Resources In The Rural Elementary Schools Of Sacramento County, California, Orville James Sipe

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study was used in elementary science at the Rio Linda Union School, Sacramento Country, California as an orientation course in the seventh and eighth grades to transform school science from a mysterious abstraction into an understandable, enjoyable and useful field of knowledge that is indispensable to a child's understanding of his environment. This is of value to the child especially during his out-of-school activities, which is so well brought out by McBee:........the purpose of child study of nature is to put the child into intimate and essential contact with things of his external world, thereby developing a keen and …

The Educational Program In The National Parks With Particular Reference To Those In The Western States, John S. Germain Jan 1941

The Educational Program In The National Parks With Particular Reference To Those In The Western States, John S. Germain

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A series of radio broad casts over Station KGO, San Francisco, California, in the spring of 1935, first brought to my attention the great value of the National Parks in the field of adult education.

Subsequently, in visiting some of the world's greatest natural wonders, which are located in the National Parks in the western part of the United States, I have had the opportunity to observe some of the fine educational facilities made available to the visitor through the service of the park naturalists. The purpose of this thesis is to bring out the importance to the visitor of …

The Development And Evaluation Of An Outline Of A Course In Physical Science For Eleventh And Twelfth Year Students, Arthur Wilson Everett Jan 1941

The Development And Evaluation Of An Outline Of A Course In Physical Science For Eleventh And Twelfth Year Students, Arthur Wilson Everett

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the years since 1929 it has been the privilege of the writer to serve as a teacher in the science department of the high school at Stockton, California. During those years he has been associated with students of all four years of the high school, with a slight majority of the time spent with students of the first two years of high school. Inevitably, certain observations occurred. With those observations, certain convictions, beliefs, and desires to assist, developed concerning the students who pass through our schools.

It is only natural, therefore, that one in such a position should be …

A Survey Of Music Education In The Smaller High Schools Of California And A Program Of Music Courses, Carol C. Carter Jan 1941

A Survey Of Music Education In The Smaller High Schools Of California And A Program Of Music Courses, Carol C. Carter

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It was the author's privilege to begin teaching in a small secondary school. There, it is his firm belief, is the place for most beginning teachers to commence their life's work.

It is here that one finds problems in curricula and procedures that he would probably never dream of during his theoretical training.

There one would be asked to teach many subjects other than the one he has chosen in his major field. This should not prove to be a hardship but a blessing in that one would have develop initiative and in many other ways round out his personality. …
