Food is a part of people’s lives, even when it is not acknowledged. It is distinctly tied to various cultures, ethnicities, and religions; with elements of restriction and gluttony abundant. Then, there is the complication of modern nutrition and health education that is taught in American, and more specifically in Californian schools. But, the education received on this issue has failed some students. Basic Needs Initiative at California State University, Monterey Bay is a department that provides students with food, housing, and wellness resources. Over half of the university's students experience food insecurity, and over 85% use non-academic resources to learn about nutrition. This project adds a dietary health section to the department’s website to increase students’ access to nutrition education. It addresses the micro-level agency problem that too few students eat a healthy, balanced diet. Unhealthy eating is a risk factor for food insecurity, so the project indirectly addresses the macro-level health problem that too many college students in California experience food …

Often, elementary school curriculum neglects to include nutrition education. Because nutrition education does not receive much instructional time, students may not learn about proper nutrition, which may make it difficult to lead a healthy lifestyle as they get older. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2014), during the 2011-2012 school year, 52% of districts required some type of skill-based nutrition education, while only 35% required a curriculum be provided for each grade level.
