Linking Extracurricular Involvement And Mental Health, Nicholas Twohig

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

The purpose of my study is to determine the effect that extracurricular involvement has on those who identify as mentally unhealthy at the University of San Diego. Extracurricular activities consist of those pursued in addition to the normal course of study (music, intramural sports, drama, etc.). Several studies have shown a rise in mental health issues on college campuses today. Using Astin’s Theory of Involvement, I would like to determine at what levels of involvement do students find their mental health positively changing, and how in my position as the Graduate Assistant for Student Activities and Involvement can I best …

New Jersey is the first state in the United States to take action and mandate mental health training for all law enforcement officers. Cards On The Table: A Practicum Experience Aiming To Bridge The Gap Between Otterbein's Athletes And Mental Health Services, Asha Wallace

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects

The purpose of this practicum was to help bridge the gap between Otterbein’s athletic population and mental health services. Previous research has discussed the potential barriers to student athletes seeking mental health assistance from their institution, including by not limited to lack of time, stigma, education, and negative past experiences. A barrier for receiving care for DIII athletes, specifically, is access. It has been noted that, due to limited resources, Otterbein does not have a mental health professional designated specifically to its athletes. There are, however, a variety of resources both on and around campus that can increase the mental …

Predictors Of Goal Attainment Among High School Students In Accelerated Academic Curricula Receiving School-Based Motivational Interviewing Intervention, Camille E. Hanks

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs represent a unique group of adolescents given the high demands of their rigorous coursework and the elevated stress they experience compared to peers in the general education (Suldo & Shaunessy-Dedrick, 2013). These students are often missed in traditional screening procedures that tend to identify students struggling academically or exhibiting disruptive behaviors. Fortunately, Shaunessy-Dedrick and colleagues (2021) developed a comprehensive school-based intervention program, including universal (Tier 1) and selective (Tier 2) components, which aims to support the well-being of AP/IB students. The Tier 2 component of this program (i.e., …

Assessing And Preventing The Risk Of Burnout In The Resident Assistant Position, Caroline Ellen Murray

Resident Assistants (RAs) are student leaders who serve on the front lines of college student care. Due to the demanding and often conflicting nature of their assigned responsibilities, students who serve in this role do so at high risk for mental and emotional burnout. This project will assess and interrogate the main factors that contribute to RA burnout. These factors include role ambiguity, compassion fatigue, and job severity. This project will also provide intervention strategies that will prevent and mitigate this risk of burnout. These strategies include implementing a mental health-centered RA training, mandating RA-specific counseling services, and implementing an …

As an African American or Black woman, there is an expectation to be strong at all times. They are often glorified for their resiliency. Unfortunately, that strength and the expectation of it, can prove to be detrimental to African American or Black women's health. The Superwoman Schema, originally studied in 2010 by Woods-Giscomb, is the double edge sword that is handed to African American or Black women at a young age. The purpose of this qualitative study was to expand Wood-Giscomb's research by examining the perceptions of the impact of the Superwoman Schema on African American or Black graduate students …

Mental Health, School Climate, And The Resilience Of Lgbtqia+ Mexican/X Youth, Damon R. Carbajal

Through this three-prong approach, I analyze the lived realities of LGBTQIA+ Mexican/x youth, the traumas of discrimination, …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The focus issue addressed in this Capstone Project is the effects of mental health disorders on the education of middle school students. This is an important issue for students, parents, and educators because there is a critical connection between mental health and the academic performance of middle school students. It is argued that mental disorders have drastic, negative effects on the success of students in education. The primary stakeholder perspectives chosen were two parents, two middle school students, and one middle school educator, because their personal thoughts, experiences, and opinions give an insight into the relationship between mental health and …

Specifically, owners were interviewed to find whether the perceived benefits of owning an ESA outweigh the associated costs …

Dissertations

This autoethnography shares our personal experiences, narratives, and counter-stories as we view the social justice issues of inequities in the education of African American students. Through our journey, we highlighted our personal views and real scenarios as seen through the eyes of a reading specialist, social worker, and college-level administrator. Critical Race Theory in Education (CRT) served as our primary guiding force allowing us to focus on the following tenets: counter-stories, permanence of racism, whiteness as property, interest convergence, and critique of liberalism (Dixson, Anderson & Donnor, 2017). Critical Race Theory (CRT) is the framework in Social Sciences that examines …

The Educational Impact That Social Media Has On School Age Children's Mental Health And Educational Experiences, Kasondra Janc

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Studies have shown that school involvement and the policies that they have created can impact adolescents’ mental health. Social media is one of the most widely used online platforms and a reason why school-aged children want cell-phones, tablets and computers. There are several types of social media platforms, both online, on the TV, and advertisements posted on online and on billboards. However, the lack of power over the social media world is cause for concern. If school age students have access to social media twenty-four seven, and many school districts are turning a blind eye to it, this is unacceptable. …

Waffle, Ashley Tippit

All ETDs from UAB

Waffle is a novel about a high school senior realizing she has an anxiety disorder and is pansexual. Aside from wanting to tell a version of my own story, I want this to be a young adult novel that has appropriate, diverse representation. Given that several characters have identities different than mine (Jay having a single parent, Ginger being Black and having Type One Diabetes, Ella being transgender with divorced parents, and Birdie being Taiwanese-Korean American), I will need a lot of research and help to write these characters well. I want the information and experiences regarding race, gender, sexuality, …
