The Utah State Office of Education (USOE) has indicated in the objectives for many courses that students need to be able to identify measurements on a conventional ruler including 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16-inch increments (Utah State Office of Education Career and Technology Education Division, 2012, p. 2). This objective is present in Career and Technical Education (CTE) Introduction, a required class for all Utah seventh graders, and is repeated in most of the CTE Technology and Engineering courses offered in the state. This portfolio is a compilation of the author’s research-supported ideas on what good language teaching looks like. The central component is the teaching philosophy, in which the author explains that respect for individuality, use of technology, and use of culture as context for learning are the three elements seen as most important for successful language learning.

Criteria For Transition For Self-Contained Classrooms, Christopher S. Marden

This project was an effort to ascertain what skills regular and/or resource teachers require of self-contained students with learning disabilities in order to transition successfully in their classrooms. A twenty-one-question survey was given to regular and resource teachers in four junior high schools. This survey questioned teachers with regards to what the minimal academic, behavioral and procedural criteria should be mastered before students transition into regular classrooms. Once this information is received, self-contained teachers may analyze their curriculum, behavioral and classroom procedures to better mirror the requirements and the realities of the regular and/or resource classrooms.

For many years the office practice curriculums in the small high schools in Utah have been incomplete. Small high schools generally do not offer the same opportunities for learning as larger high schools due to the lack of funds, a smaller student body, and a shortage of trained personnel. Their distance from larger metropolitan areas where office opportunities are more readily available has made it economically unsound to offer such training programs and facilities. Often, students do not receive adequate training to prepare them for entry level jobs upon graduation from high school.
