Counseling Clients With Traumatic Brain Injury: Exploring Counselors’ Perceived Knowledge, Comfort, And Self-Awareness, Michelle Bradham-Cousar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The number of traumatic brain injury (TBI) diagnoses continues to rise each year. Counseling is a critical factor in TBI treatment, and although numerous studies have investigated TBI outcomes, a paucity of researchers have studied professional counselors’ knowledge, comfort, and self-awareness when working with TBI clients. Due to the diversity of counselor caseloads, it is likely that counselors will serve clients with a dual diagnosis that includes TBI. These dual diagnoses include depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, psychosis, or another neurocognitive disorder. The purpose of this study was to explore counselors’ knowledge, comfort, and self-awareness when working with individuals with …

Validation Of A Brief Prosody Rating Scale For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sarai S. Holbrook

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Differences in the speech prosody, or "melody" of speech, of persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have long been noted by researchers. Yet, despite many studies, researchers have not identified a universal description of speech prosody in ASD. It may be flat or monotonous, not different from typical, or overly variable. However, atypical speech prosody can immediately set someone apart from their peers. This distinction could negatively social, academic, and vocational interactions. For those persons with ASD whose speech prosody is different from typical and interferes with daily functioning, valid, reliable, and efficient assessments of speech prosody are needed. Currently, …

Assessing English Language Learners For Special Education Services, Emily Grams Jul 2020

Assessing English Language Learners For Special Education Services, Emily Grams

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The importance of understanding how to assess ELs for special education is a critical topic in the education field. According to Becker & Deris (2019) many school professionals lack the appropriate understanding of testing tools to properly assess and evaluate ELLs; once referred to an assessment team, the student has a greater than 50% chance of being identified as disabled. In order to better assess ELs, evaluation teams need to consider the whole student including their second language acquisition of English, culture, background, and their native language. Over the last decade, the amount of ELs and language minority students in …

Assessment Best Practices: A Review Of Current Best Practices At The Secondary And Local Level, Amanda Reed

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Assessment is a critical component of being an educator. Research has shown that educators put more of their trust in their local assessments’ data, rather than that of state mandated testing. Therefore educators must be well educated on the best practices that surround assessments, in order to ensure that the data in which they are trusting is the most accurate and appropriate measure of their student’s success. This capstone project reviews the current literature surrounding such practices in order to answer the question: Is it possible to extend the knowledge of current research, to educators, through the form of a …

Second Language Acquisition And Standardized Assessment Practices, Hal Scott Schmeisser Jun 2020

Second Language Acquisition And Standardized Assessment Practices, Hal Scott Schmeisser

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the history of the United States, tests have been utilized as a means to exclude and marginalize immigrant and minority populations, and in the absence of a national language policy have served as de facto language policy. English Learners (ELs) have been among the fastest-growing student populations in the United States, comprising a heterogeneous group with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Research findings concerning the assessment of ELs highlight a significant difference in the academic performance of these students from that of their native English speaking classmates. ELs face a substantial hurdle in learning both English and academic content …

Formative assessment is a key pedagogical tool that allows teachers to make instructional assessments in real time for the improvement of student learning. It gives students the opportunity to provide evidence of their learning thus giving teachers assurances that their hard work is not in vain. Formative assessment is commonly practiced in Western schools, while most Saudi science classroom teachers rely on end-of-unit summative assessment. A review of the literature reveals that very little research has been done related to Saudi teachers’ use of formative assessment in science classrooms. The goal of this dissertation was to address this absence of …

The Magic Of Teaching And Assessing Writ [ Rid ] Ing, Kristina Koehler Mar 2020

The Magic Of Teaching And Assessing Writ [ Rid ] Ing, Kristina Koehler

Theses and Dissertations

Theories of hermeneutics (Moss) and complementarity (Broad and Boyd) claim that human understandings deepen when inquiries are informed by multiple perspectives. This thesis renders two distinct but related pedagogical enterprises—the teaching of writing and the teaching of horseback riding—reciprocally illuminating and complicating. As a result, the Elbovian “magic” of teaching, assessing, writing, and riding has come to light: the delicate humanity and intimacy of our work in both “communities of practice” (Star). My argument calls teachers to embrace this “magic” in our classrooms by addressing and normalizing fears that both we and our students experience. Doing so is essential to …
