Pre-Service Elementary Teachers' Use Of Spatial Diagrams: Investigations Of Unbounded Shearing On Solid Figures, Camden G. Bock Dec 2019

Pre-Service Elementary Teachers' Use Of Spatial Diagrams: Investigations Of Unbounded Shearing On Solid Figures, Camden G. Bock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mithala and Balacheff (2019) describe three difficulties with two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional geometrical objects: “it is no longer possible to confuse the representation with the object itself,” visually observed relationships can be misleading, and analysis of the representation requires the use of lower-dimensional theoretical properties. Despite these difficulties, students are routinely expected to learn about three-dimensional figures through interacting with two-dimensional inscriptions. Three-dimensional alternatives include diagrams realized through various spatial inscriptions (e.g., Dimmel & Bock, 2019; Gecu-Parmaksiz & Delialioglu, 2019; Lai, McMahan, Kitagawa & Connolly, 2016; Ng and Sinclair, 2018). Such diagrams are three-dimensional in the sense that they occupy …

A Utility Framework For Selecting Immersive Interactive Capability And Technology For Virtual Laboratories, Shuo Ren Apr 2019

A Utility Framework For Selecting Immersive Interactive Capability And Technology For Virtual Laboratories, Shuo Ren

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There has been an increase in the use of virtual reality (VR) technology in the education community since VR is emerging as a potent educational tool that offers students with a rich source of educational material and makes learning exciting and interactive. With a rise of popularity and market expansion in VR technology in the past few years, a variety of consumer VR electronics have boosted educators and researchers’ interest in using these devices for practicing engineering and science laboratory experiments. However, little is known about how such devices may be well-suited for active learning in a laboratory environment. This …

Virtual Reality Technology-Enabled Educational Approaches For Those With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Randolph S. Hull Jan 2019

Virtual Reality Technology-Enabled Educational Approaches For Those With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Randolph S. Hull

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This literature review examines research studies that evaluated the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) simulated interventions in people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) including their enjoyment of the process and their ability to transfer VR learning to real-life situations. VR provides a safe and controllable environment that implements realistic computer-based simulated interactions that allow for repeated skill practice and gives participants the ability to progress at their own pace. Most of the research reviewed focused on improving specific deficit areas for those with ASD. Virtual reality interventions were used to increase social and emotional skills involving areas such as: social …

Nuanced Narratives: Reporting With Critical Race And Feminist Standpoint Theories, Emily Margaret Pelland Jan 2019

Nuanced Narratives: Reporting With Critical Race And Feminist Standpoint Theories, Emily Margaret Pelland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The Google Expedition titled WWI Era Through the Eyes of the Chicago Defender explores African American experiences during the early years of the Great Migration (1910-1970). Conventional journalism relies on the false idea that journalists are meant to be, and can be, objective, outside observers. This report provides tools for journalists to create more nuanced, thorough storytelling endeavors. This report describes the theoretical framework and intent of the Virtual Reality (VR) project for students in grades 8 and above. It utilizes Feminist Standpoint Theory (FST) and Critical Race Theory (CRT) to cultivate a VR experience that acknowledges particular, overlooked aspects …

The Importance Of Including Interactive Immersive Technology In Instructional Design To Enhance Learner And User Experience, Shawneda Crout Jan 2019

The Importance Of Including Interactive Immersive Technology In Instructional Design To Enhance Learner And User Experience, Shawneda Crout

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Americans looking for work and preparing to enter the labor force use technology during every part of the journey. Every generation in the labor force and preparing to enter the labor force as freelancers, contractors, and employees need clear, effective support materials to learn how to do their job, stay abreast of the ever-changing job requirements, and deliver a satisfactory job performance. Solving the labor shortage in America will take a concerted effort from those in the private sector. Technical communicators tasked with the responsibility of designing instructional resources should know how to include interactive immersive technology in product use …
