Structural Poverty And College Enrollment: The Impact Of Rural American Determinism, Bryan Robinson
Structural Poverty And College Enrollment: The Impact Of Rural American Determinism, Bryan Robinson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Abstract
The pervasiveness of generational poverty in the US and the potential of a postsecondary (college) education to serve as an ameliorator and catalyst for societal change – both in individual, familial and broader community contexts – is established in the literature (Enberg & Wolniak, 2010; Kaufman, 2014; Turley, 2009; Rank, Yoon & Hirschl, 2015). Rank et al. (2003) found that American poverty is structural in nature as it relates to the labor market and related ineffective social policy, resulting in predictable and repetitious cycles of systemic and generational poverty, which is particularly relevant in rural contexts. Tickameyer and Duncan …
Social Support For Physical Activity For High Schoolers In Rural Appalachia, Pooja M. Shah
Social Support For Physical Activity For High Schoolers In Rural Appalachia, Pooja M. Shah
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of the present study is to conduct a secondary qualitative analysis to examine parent, teacher, and high school adolescents’ perceptions of social support for physical activity (PA) for high schoolers in Southern Appalachia. Social support for PA is linked to higher rates of PA participation in adolescents. Parents, siblings, and peers provide key sources of support. Social support for PA may be even more important in under-resourced communities such as Appalachia, where geographic, economic, and environmental barriers negatively impact PA engagement. During 2013-2014, focus groups and semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents of adolescents (n=39), high school teachers …

Cultural Change In Rural Schools Through Enrichment And Intervention In A Quality After-School Program, Kimberly Stepp Mrs.
Projects
A review of the best practices and research literature resulted in the implementation and evaluation of an after-school program for a small rural school in Northern California. The program is designed to overcome some unique challenges for rural schools by offering after school instructional support, homework assistance, and enrichment opportunities that work together to create a rich and successful environment to support student growth. A program evaluation survey measured parents’/guardians’ satisfaction with the program demonstrating significant support after two years. Student achievement data as monitored by teachers and administrators, demonstrated the program’s academic effectiveness in supporting student growth. The included …
An Examination Of College Persistence Factors For Students From Different Rural Communities: A Multilevel Analysis, Andrew Hudacs
An Examination Of College Persistence Factors For Students From Different Rural Communities: A Multilevel Analysis, Andrew Hudacs
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Students transitioning into college from public school require more than just academic readiness; they also need the personal attributes that allow them to successfully transition into a new community (Braxton, Doyle, Hartley III, Hirschy, Jones, & McLendon, 2014; Nora, 2002; Nora, 2004; Tinto, 1975). Rural students have a different educational experience than their peers at schools in suburban and urban locations (DeYoung & Howley, 1990; Gjelten, 1982). Additionally, the resources, culture, and educational opportunities at rural schools also vary among different types of rural communities. Although some studies have examined the influence of rural students' academic achievement on college access …
A Case Study Of The Design And Implementation Of A New Teacher Evaluation System In A Northern Michigan School District, Scott Moore
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify how one district attempted to meet the need for greater accountability in the teacher evaluation process as mandated by law and to describe strategies that were employed by the district to ensure the integration of student achievement data. This research highlighted how a teacher evaluation instrument evolved over a 5-year period from 2011 to the end of the 2014–2015 school year. This qualitative, single-case study comprised examination of interview responses of 17 stakeholders including a former superintendent, technology director, two board of education members, three former principals, and ten teacher-leaders. Open-ended interview …
Rural Adults In Education: Why Don't They Come? A Curriculum Addressing Dispositional Barriers To Participation, Erica A. Silver
Rural Adults In Education: Why Don't They Come? A Curriculum Addressing Dispositional Barriers To Participation, Erica A. Silver
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Rural adults participate in education at lower rates than their urban counterparts. If rural communities and their residents are to compete and stay viable in a global economy that demands life-long learning, it is imperative to increase adult motivation to engage in education. Non- participation by rural adults will be examined through an investigation of the concept of rural, rural education, participants and non-participants, and barriers to and motivations for participation. Lastly, Wlodkowski’s (2008) Motivational Framework for Culturally Responsive Teaching will be explored as a framework to present a learning-to-learn curriculum addressing local barriers to rural adult non-participation and promoting …
Small Town, Big Future: Preparing Rural Maine Students For College, Elizabeth C. Huber
Small Town, Big Future: Preparing Rural Maine Students For College, Elizabeth C. Huber
Honors Theses
While the need for a college degree has increased in the knowledge economy era, acquisition of this degree has remained difficult for low-income and first-generation students. At the same time, college preparatory programs designed for this demographic of student tend to be clustered in urban centers while very little focus is given to disadvantaged students in rural communities. The academic prospects of rural students in regards to higher education are the focus of this project. More specifically, this project explores the ways in which college-cultured programs may address the educational needs of students living in rural communities. By doing in-depth …
