Pbis: Moving Beyond A Focus On Behavior To Relationships, Flor Gomez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

School-Wide Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (SW-PBIS or PBIS) is a classroom management system that has become increasingly popular in our K-12 educational systems. PBIS was originally created for special needs students and it is now being enforced in schools with a large number of minority student populations. This classroom management method relies on a token rewards system that focuses on reinforcing positive behavior in the classroom. Issues with this classroom management system encompass it being a form of exclusionary discipline, a student conditioning system, and not a culturally grounded and/or responsive system. For this Capstone Project, teachers and students …

Experiences Of Teachers And Staff Sustaining Pbis Practices At A Rural Elementary School In The Pacific Northwest, Omar Flores Nov 2017

Experiences Of Teachers And Staff Sustaining Pbis Practices At A Rural Elementary School In The Pacific Northwest, Omar Flores

Education Dissertations

There are many challenges faced by rural school communities in the Pacific Northwest. Problems such as social isolation, poverty, limited resources, and the disappearance of traditional industries such as, timber production, farming and forest service professions are often reflected in local school culture. While rural schools pose interesting challenges, there are limited studies that explore the experiences and perceptions of staff sustaining multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) such as positive behavior interventions and support (PBIS). The purpose of this phenomenological study is to examine the perceptions and experiences of administrators, teachers, specialists and support staff at a rural elementary school …

Building Classroom Communities In A Pbis World: Voices Of Teacher Candidates As They Transition Into First-Year Teachers, Kira A. Hamann Feb 2017

Building Classroom Communities In A Pbis World: Voices Of Teacher Candidates As They Transition Into First-Year Teachers, Kira A. Hamann

Theses and Dissertations

For both beginning and veteran teachers, classroom management consistently ranks as one of their primary areas of concern (Hoy & Woolfolk, 1990; Martin, Yin, & Mayall, 2006; Oakes, Lipton, Anderson, & Stillman, 2013; Veenman, 1983), and this concern is magnified in the early childhood years because these teachers are often the first service providers to interact with children exhibiting challenging behaviors (Powell, Fixsen, Dunlap, Smith, & Fox, 2007; Tillery, Varjas, Meyers, & Collins, 2010). Mixed messages in early childhood teacher preparation regarding the role of democracy and community in the classroom and the more behavioristic settings of field placements and …

Incorporating Brief Functional Behavior Assessments In A Tier Two Behavior Intervention, Larissa Wing

M.S.Ed. in Educational Leadership Research Projects

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to better understand how FBA information could support students who were currently unsuccessful with their existing check in/check out intervention. Teachers were interviewed to both better understand their perceptions of the existing check in/check out system and query their thoughts on the altered intervention. This study further explored the effect(s) that information, obtained from a brief functional behavioral assessment had when incorporated into an existing tier two behavior intervention system. Students’ standardized test scores and frequency of office discipline referrals were also evaluated.

A Comparative Study On The Impact Of Pbis On Student Academic Achievement And Behavior, Kristin Nicole Pitts

Education Dissertations and Projects

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) were initiated to address behavior problems for students with disabilities in the school system but became a proactive discipline approach for all students. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of PBIS on all student behavior and to examine possible connections to academic achievement. Student behavior can be impacted by many things including teacher attitude, academic struggles, and climate of a school. The focus of this study was to determine if PBIS reduces office discipline referrals (ODR) and if there are any impacts on student standardized achievement scores from PBIS. This …
