Engaging Students In Authentic Mathematical Discourse In A High School Mathematics Classroom, Whitney Ann Evans May 2017

Engaging Students In Authentic Mathematical Discourse In A High School Mathematics Classroom, Whitney Ann Evans

MSU Graduate Theses

The purpose of this study is to gain insight into the successes and challenges a teacher faces when implementing authentic mathematical discourse in a high school mathematics classroom. Nine lessons were implemented that emphasized student engagement in Common Core Mathematics Practice Three (MP3) (construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.) This was a qualitative action research study that took place in a Geometry classroom with 16 9th-11th grade students. Personal journal entries were recorded by the teacher-researcher after each lesson which included detailed summaries of the lesson and reflections on instances of students engaging in MP3 as well …

The Successes And Challenges Of Utilizing Geogebra To Integrate Mp5: Use Appropriate Tools Strategically, David Scott Matthews Ii May 2017

The Successes And Challenges Of Utilizing Geogebra To Integrate Mp5: Use Appropriate Tools Strategically, David Scott Matthews Ii

MSU Graduate Theses

The purpose of this action research study was to identify the successes and challenges a teacher experienced when GeoGebra was incorporated into an Algebra II unit of study with the goal of integrating the fifth mathematical practice of the Common Core State Standards, use appropriate tools strategically. Data were collected from 20 student participants and the teacher-researcher via the following methods: teacher-researcher self-observations, peer educator observations, student interviews, and video-recordings. Instruments in the form of an observational protocol, utilized by observers, and an interview protocol, utilized by the interviewer, were employed. The data analysis indicated two successes: the teacher-researcher’s instruction …

The Technocratic Politics Of The Common Core State Standards In History, Kate Duguid Feb 2017

The Technocratic Politics Of The Common Core State Standards In History, Kate Duguid

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This paper shows that the explicit aims of the American educational standards for public schools, the Common Core State Standards to teach history to create “college and career ready” students, marks a shift from preparing students for political participation to preparing them for market participation. I trace the intellectual and pedagogical origins of the Common Core’s pretense of technocratic apolitical values back through the previous two major American curricular reform efforts. In the first section I discuss the origins and development of the National History Standards and show how Cold War anxiety prompted a shift in evaluating students as potential …

Integrating The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics In A Secondary School, Danielle Holmes Campbell Jan 2017

Integrating The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics In A Secondary School, Danielle Holmes Campbell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem that anchored this study was district leaders' and administrators' lack of clarity regarding teacher concerns about the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) implementation in high school math. The purposes of the study were to (a) examine the perception of high school math teachers regarding the barriers for successfully implementing the CCSSM, and (b) to elicit recommendations for teacher preparation. Ely's theory of change was utilized to relate the entity of the CCSSM to this new shift in education. To better understand this phenomenon, 2 research questions accompanied this study. The research questions were geared to not …

Teacher Perceptions Of The Implementation Of The Common Core State Standards In The Schools Of The Florida Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists: A Qualitative Case Study, Rose J. Thomas

Dissertations

Problem

This qualitative case study focused on educators who teach in the Florida Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and their perceptions regarding the adequacy of the Professional Development to support the implementation of the CCSS; how they are implementing the CCSS in the classroom in terms of planning, teaching, and assessing; and their perceptions regarding the impact of the CCSS on student learning.

Method

The study included six participants who taught in six different schools from the various regions where the Florida Conference schools are located. The participants varied in age, ethnicity, number of years in the classroom, and the size …
