A Survey Of The Educational Practices Of The Haudenosaunee Confederacy And The Implications For Cultural Sovereignty, Kimberly Lyman-Wright

Education Doctoral

The Indian Self-Determination and Educational Assistance Act of 1975 allowed American Indian students an education in public school systems in the United States. However, colonization has threatened the survival of and called into question the need and validity of traditional American Indian languages and Haudenosaunee culture. Although American Indian students have access to a public school education, research has documented achievement gaps in the academic success of American Indian students. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore, understand, and describe the educational practices of Haudenosaunee educators, and whether a strong cultural awareness has an impact on academic success. …

Student Veteran Success: A Grounded Theory Study, Peter W. Granger Dec 2016

Student Veteran Success: A Grounded Theory Study, Peter W. Granger

Education Doctoral

Student veterans in undergraduate post-secondary education face many challenges. Current research addresses these unique challenges and offers recommendations for further research, as well as strategies for college administrators and faculty seeking to assist student veterans. However, the research does not address the strategies student veterans use to succeed. The purpose of this grounded theory study is to start this conversation. The objective of this study is to present a theory that predicts and explains student veterans’ success, using grounded theory methodology to examine student veteran strategies to succeed in college. Thirteen student veterans from two different colleges participated in the …

Early prekindergarten program (EPK) and universal prekindergarten program (UPK) (n = 89) lead teachers completed the TSES, representing a cross-section of all 3 and 4-year-old preschool lead teachers in a mid-sized urban district. Teachers completed the TSES via SurveyMonkey. CLASS observations were conducted …

Perceptions Of Significance Regarding Prenatal Care Among Multiparous Maternal Patients, Susan E. Wurzer Gustafson Dec 2016

Perceptions Of Significance Regarding Prenatal Care Among Multiparous Maternal Patients, Susan E. Wurzer Gustafson

Education Doctoral

Pregnancy, with the inherent need for prenatal care, is a global condition. Research has demonstrated a positive relationship between maternal adherence to prenatal care with associated maternal, fetal, and delivery outcomes of pregnancy. Non-adherence has been shown to increase risks of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Despite the importance of care, maternal adherence to prenatal care is problematic, pervasive, and persists without an identified etiology. Research to identify a causation for maternal nonadherence has focused upon groups of women with shared traits or circumstance as a predisposing risk. The aim of this study was to identify how adherent multiparous …

Servant Leadership And Cultural Characteristics As Predictors Of Follower Engagement, George Bovenzi Dec 2016

Servant Leadership And Cultural Characteristics As Predictors Of Follower Engagement, George Bovenzi

Education Doctoral

Servant leadership theory, introduced in the 1970s, has gained in popularity in recent years. Servant leadership’s roots in serving, caring, and behaving ethically makes it a leadership model that is timely and relevant in light of today’s global, organizational, and political challenges. Additionally, an engaged workforce is considered to be a key lever that organizations utilize to gain an advantage in the marketplace while disengaged employees present a significant cost to companies. Nevertheless, servant leadership’s impact on organizations and specifically its ability to engage employees has received limited research. This quantitative study was undertaken in a multinational manufacturing organization and …

The researcher utilized a two dimensional theoretical framework that focused on McCubbin & Patterson (1983) theory of family stress and adaptation (double ABCX model) and Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development (1968). Utilizing the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), 5 participants were identified scoring 76-100 on the scale, indicating a high resiliency level. Through …

The Effectiveness Of The Rising Starr Sophomore Program On Sophomore Slump, Lisa-Ann M. O'Connor Aug 2016

The Effectiveness Of The Rising Starr Sophomore Program On Sophomore Slump, Lisa-Ann M. O'Connor

Education Doctoral

Research suggested that there is a need for higher education institutions to focus on retaining sophomore students, as many struggle with sophomore slump. The term sophomore slump is “widely used to describe students who lack motivation, feel disconnected, and flounder academically” (Gahagan & Hunter, 2006, p. 18). To address this matter, some institutions of higher education have invested resources into sophomore year or second-year initiatives to retain sophomore students, but the lack of reported assessment and evaluation of the effectiveness of sophomore year or second-year initiatives in higher education institutions is an issue. The most cited initiatives that universities created …

This quantitative study used the Multi-Institutional Study of …

A Qualitative Descriptive Study Examining The Current State Of The New York 4-H Program From A Leader’S Perspective, Megan E. Tifft Aug 2016

A Qualitative Descriptive Study Examining The Current State Of The New York 4-H Program From A Leader’S Perspective, Megan E. Tifft

Education Doctoral

Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) represent a fast-growing industry with significant value in today’s society. NPOs are filling gaps in providing services the government can no longer deliver and are considered an economic industry worth billions of dollars. As evidenced in research, NPOs are facing a multitude of challenges. Still, most of these challenges are addressed as standalone issues. Research has provided tools and suggestions for how leadership can address singular challenges; however, few researchers have examined challenges broadly. It has been confirmed that organizational leadership needs to understand, from a leader’s perspective, the challenges of the organization so that efforts can …

Despite over 100 years of service, commitment to academic achievement and community uplifting the impact of historically Black fraternities and sororities, Black Greek letter organizations (BGLOs) remain an understudied research area. Specifically, there exists little empirical research exploring the membership experiences of women belonging to a historically Black sorority. This phenomenological study explored the ways in which a one chapter, Pi Delta Chapter of BGLO Delta Sigma Theta …
