Exploring Hispanic Teacher Candidates' Beliefs About The Value Of Play In Children's Learning And Development, Diana H. Cortez-Castro
Theses and Dissertations
Play has been globally recognized as valuable to children's learning and development (Frost et al., 2012). The value of play is acknowledged as a developmentally appropriate practice in part because it fosters cognitive, physical, emotional, and social benefits to children. Play is also known as a human right that should be protected. However, in the past five decades there has been a significant decline of play due to multiple and interrelated factors, which are having dire consequences on children's learning and developmental possibilities (Almon & Miller, 2011; Gray, 2013). Health Hub Program Evaluation, Natalie Macias
Master's Projects and Capstones
This paper examines and evaluates the work of LIFT-Levántate a non-profit organization in San Rafael, California on their school-based nutritional education “health hub,” through health promotion interventions with adolescents. The James B. Davidson Middle School health hub educates students on topics related to nutrition and physical activity with the goal of providing access and increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables while lowering students’ intake of high-fat and sugary processed foods. Through research and observations of the students and families in this community, the data seems to indicate apparent disparities which vary by ethnicity, socioeconomic status and access. Underserved populations, including …

Supporting An Understanding Of Mathematics Teacher Educators:Identifying Shared Beliefs And Ways Of Enacting Their Craft, Joseph S. Rino
Theses and Dissertations
For many preservice elementary and secondary teachers, the first time they encounter the notion that mathematics can be taught in ways other than what they experienced is in their teacher preparation program. Therefore, the potential impact of the mathematics teacher educator on the understanding and development of preservice teachers is immense, especially as that impact is considered in connection to the various reform efforts related to mathematics education that have spread across the country for the past three decades. Given the scarcity of systematic research focused on mathematics teacher educators, the author sought to understand defining characteristics of that role. …

Development Of The Setis Instrument To Measure Teachers' Self-Efficacy To Teach Science In An Integrated Stem Framework, Monica Clutch Mobley
Doctoral Dissertations
Integrated STEM teaching and learning has gained increased attention in recent years as schools try to prepare students for 21st century careers. Goals of integrated STEM teaching are in alignment with goals of science education reform efforts as evident in recent document such as the Next Generation Science Standards (Achieve, Inc., 2013) and efforts are underway to encourage science instruction from within an integrated STEM framework. Teaching science content in an integrated STEM context is a complex act placing great cognitive and emotional demands on teachers, many of whom lack experience with this manner of teaching and may also …

A Qualitative Study On How A Teacher's Religious Beliefs Affect The Choices They Make In The Classroom, Sarah M. Wadsworth
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
This qualitative research project explores how a teacher’s organized religious beliefs may influence their practice and the choices they make in the classroom. It is recognized that there are many hidden ways our beliefs shape the choices we make.
