Research has indicated that the United States is lagging behind the rest of the world in producing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors and career professionals. The National Science Foundation has launched one particular initiative to address this need which is centered on underrepresented communities. Matching mentoring dyads based on similar social identities may provide necessary role models (Davidson & Foster-Johnson, 2001) and unlock subjugated knowledge (Collins 2000) about how to be both deaf and scientist. The purpose of this qualitative study was to provide an understanding of how gay, lesbian, and bisexual students on community college campuses come out regarding their sexual orientation and how their self-actualization is affected by coming out, using Maslow’s theory of human motivation as the main theoretical lens. This study was intended to provide best practices in serving these students to community college faculty, staff, and administrators, and was thus meant to benefit gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) community college students. The dissertation explores the hybrid identity, mestiza consciousness (Anzaldúa, 1999), of Latina graduates of independent schools. Latinas currently represent one of the lowest performing, fastest growing, youngest ethnic minority groups in the United States (United States Census, 2010), and the smallest demographic in independent schools (Torres, 2012). Education offers Latinas academic and social capital for economic advancement and college opportunity (Gándara & Contreras, 2009; Santiago, 2013); independent schools are an important entry to gaining this capital. This study used Harper’s (2012) anti-deficit achievement approach to examine the perceptions of Black males who have succeeded at a predominately White institution. The research brought together in-class pedagogical practices, self-efficacy, and student involvement as learning constructs linked to academic success. Qualitative research methodology captured the experiences of 13 participants through face-to-face individual interviews to gain insight into the learning environment that best engaged, retained, and helped persistence toward graduation. Federal and state mandated linguistic and academic supports for English Language Learners (ELLs) compete for instructional time, resulting in ELLs being pulled away from the general population of students multiple times per day. A variety of academic and financial performance metrics are used to assess higher education institution performance. However, there is no consensus on the best performance measures. Signaling theory and agency theory are used to frame the challenges of assessing post-secondary institution performance related to information asymmetry between the institution and stakeholders. Agency costs may be reduced with a better understanding of the relationship among assessment variables. This quantitative study investigated the leadership capacity of minority youth. The research used a sample population of 322 ninth and tenth grade urban school students, in a medium sized secondary school in the lower Hudson Valley of New York. The participants completed the Youth Leadership Questionnaire, an 18 item self-report instrument that measured leadership capacity in relation to Self-concept, Self-efficacy, and Emotional Intelligence. The study explored the lived experiences of teachers who participated in a shared intervention with an interventionist within the Tier 2 level of Response to Intervention (RtI). A qualitative phenomenological approach was used to explore the lived experiences of the teachers. Teachers are required to participate in RtI prior to identifying a student with a learning disability, as dictated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004). RtI is a two-pronged model. It is used as a method for identifying students with learning disabilities. The 2009 Report to Congress on Head Start Monitoring indicated that Head Start grantee non-compliance findings have increased since 2008, implying that grantee non-compliance is an issue for the Head Start field. The poor performance of grantees during Federal Monitoring Reviews demonstrates the critical need to investigate turnaround practices of Head Start directors who have successfully improved their low-performing programs to high-performing in compliance with the Head Start Performance Standards (HSPS) and successfully achieved a Federal Monitoring Review with no findings.
