Nature Of Deaf Mentoring Dyads: Role Of Subjugated Knowledge, Jason D. Listman Dec 2013

Nature Of Deaf Mentoring Dyads: Role Of Subjugated Knowledge, Jason D. Listman

Education Doctoral

Research has indicated that the United States is lagging behind the rest of the world in producing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors and career professionals. The National Science Foundation has launched one particular initiative to address this need which is centered on underrepresented communities. Matching mentoring dyads based on similar social identities may provide necessary role models (Davidson & Foster-Johnson, 2001) and unlock subjugated knowledge (Collins 2000) about how to be both deaf and scientist. Among their underrepresented counterparts, deaf individuals are disproportionately underrepresented in STEM careers (NSF, 2011). The leakage in the STEM pipeline between undergraduate enrollment …

An Analysis Of The Perceptions Of The Legal Profession Through The Eyes Of Dissatisfied Consumers Of Legal Services In Manhattan, Ny: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Caprice A. Alves

Education Doctoral

In the past, research on consumer dissatisfaction with legal services tended to be quantitative in nature, and focused primarily on consumer opinion of the legal profession. These quantitative studies have been valuable in gaining a basic understanding of consumer consensus of legal services and the legal profession. However, a qualitative understanding of the complexity of the personal dissatisfaction experience with legal services, as well as the psychological and social meanings and consequences of these experiences, is an important contribution to the literature. This dissertation provides a qualitative view of the experience of consumer dissatisfaction with legal services in Manhattan, NY. …

Soy Mi Cuento: Latina Students Bridging Multiple Worlds In Independent Schools, Lillian Díaz-Imbelli Dec 2013

Soy Mi Cuento: Latina Students Bridging Multiple Worlds In Independent Schools, Lillian Díaz-Imbelli

Education Doctoral

The dissertation explores the hybrid identity, mestiza consciousness (Anzaldúa, 1999), of Latina graduates of independent schools. Latinas currently represent one of the lowest performing, fastest growing, youngest ethnic minority groups in the United States (United States Census, 2010), and the smallest demographic in independent schools (Torres, 2012). Education offers Latinas academic and social capital for economic advancement and college opportunity (Gándara & Contreras, 2009; Santiago, 2013); independent schools are an important entry to gaining this capital. Latinas attending independent schools often enter heterogeneous educational environments for the first time and find the need to explore their identity more salient (French, …

Implementing Innovation With Ambidextrous Leadership In Small And Medium Enterprises., Deborah L. Pearce Dec 2013

Implementing Innovation With Ambidextrous Leadership In Small And Medium Enterprises., Deborah L. Pearce

Education Doctoral

Implementation was an overlooked aspect, with a paucity of research until the 1990s. Although scholarly and practical research grew, the preponderance focused on large established organizations. Only more recently have small and medium enterprises (SMEs) received attention. Yet, economic vitality depends on SME success. The study investigated innovation implementation in SMEs. Focus was on ambidextrous leaderships, senior leaders’ efforts to advance their organizations by ensuring capabilities for both current and future innovations. The study identified how senior leaders’ individual orientations motivated innovation and its implementation. Using a concurrent embedded mixed method design (Creswell, 2009), quantitative data was collected using a …

Cross-Cultural Competence In Transnational Medical Education Partnership, Greta Rosalie Strong Dec 2013

Cross-Cultural Competence In Transnational Medical Education Partnership, Greta Rosalie Strong

Education Doctoral

The purposes of the study were to discover the knowledge, behaviors, and skills that foster cross-cultural competence in transnational medical education partnership and to unite the research process with theory development. Selected literature and a modicum of concepts limited the framing of this study from an existing theoretical framework. Such a framework would have been useful in providing the basis for training of health care professionals involved in transnational ventures. To accomplish this, the research used a qualitative grounded theory approach to explore the experiences of twenty-five professionals involved in transnational medical education partnership. The research was conducted at Weill …

The Effect Of Service Dog Partnership On The Mental Health Status Of United States Veterans: A Quantitative Analysis Using The Sf-36v2 Mental Health Survey, Colleen Mclaughlin

Education Doctoral

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a historically significant problem for soldiers and Marines in the United States military. A host of recent research supports this claim, and lends itself to the question of why more is not being done to help those who suffer from combat related stress (Friedman, 2011; Kuehn, 2012; Marlantes, 2011; Sher, Braquehais, & Casas, 2012). When considering what effect service dogs might have on the mental health status of United States veterans, this study focused on the following research questions based on the SF-36v2 Mental Health Survey: What effect does partnership with a service dog …

Effective Implementation Of Technology, Jeanne Canough Aug 2013

Effective Implementation Of Technology, Jeanne Canough

Education Masters

Technology is ubiquitous, touching almost every part of our lives, our communities, our homes, yet most schools lag behind when it comes to integrating technology into classroom learning. Many schools are just beginning to explore the true potential technology can offer towards teaching and learning. Technology, when properly used, will help students acquire the skills they need to survive in a complex, highly technological knowledge-based economy. Integrating technology into classroom instruction means more than teaching basic computer skills and software programs in a separate computer class. Effective technology integration is achieved when the use of technology is routine and transparent …

The Impact Of Separationist Models Of Instructional Support On The Self-Efficacy Perceptions Of Latino English Language Learners, Brenda Triplett

Education Doctoral

Federal and state mandated linguistic and academic supports for English Language Learners (ELLs) compete for instructional time, resulting in ELLs being pulled away from the general population of students multiple times per day. Grounded in the socio-cognitive and socio-cultural theories, the research investigated the correlation between the amount of time ELL students were segregated from the general population for the purposes of delivering instructional support services and their self-efficacy perceptions to succeed in school. The Influence Of Financial Performance On Higher Education Academic Quality, Marilee Kaye Montanaro Aug 2013

The Influence Of Financial Performance On Higher Education Academic Quality, Marilee Kaye Montanaro

Education Doctoral

A variety of academic and financial performance metrics are used to assess higher education institution performance. However, there is no consensus on the best performance measures. Signaling theory and agency theory are used to frame the challenges of assessing post-secondary institution performance related to information asymmetry between the institution and stakeholders. Agency costs may be reduced with a better understanding of the relationship among assessment variables. This quantitative study uses multiple linear regressions to identify and describe the relationship between financial performance and academic quality in 1,045 public and private not-for-profit U.S. colleges and universities. U.S. News & World Report …

Faith Development In Higher Education: The Role Of The Mentor, Roy W. Minnix

Education Doctoral

We have been told, and have possibly learned through experience, that religion and politics are two subjects you should never discuss among polite company. Yet, the Christian College seeks to place religion and faith at the center of its ongoing conversations. This is especially true for a small Christian, religiously affiliated, liberal arts college in the northeast United States that seeks to engage and nurture a diverse student body in a Christ-centered, value oriented, liberal arts education. Recent literature certainly makes the case for matters of spirituality, faith, and religion to have a place in higher education. The literature has …
