Don't Count Them Out: Transitioning Adolescents' Perceptions Of Issues Impacting Learning In Middle School, Concetta Lucchese

The transition from elementary to middle school presents adolescents with challenges that deter them from becoming learning-focused students. In urban settings, transitioning students are often confronted with issues as they enter middle school and attempt to acclimatize to the new environment. This study explored first-hand experiences of transitioning urban middle school seventh graders at the completion of their first year in a middle school setting. The purpose of the study was to describe students' perceptions of the issues negatively impacting their ability to focus on learning. This phenomenological research study was conducted primarily using pre-existing data from seventh grade test …

In contrast with previous literature that examined care as teacher-based social capital measuring from the teacher perspective, this is the first study to measure care as teacher-based social capital from the perspective of the former student. The study used an established instrument, Teven and McCroskey's (1999) Source Credibility Instrument, in an on-line format to measure perceptions of care from former teachers as the independent variable. A Study Of Self-Efficacy Of Educational Professionals In Managing Classroom Behavior And Their Readiness For Differentiating Discipline, Donna Riter

Education Doctoral

Keeping children behaviorally appropriate and in their classrooms has become increasingly challenging for today's educational professionals where there is less tolerance for classroom disruption, greater expectation of performance and higher paced learning formats. These professionals face even greater dilemmas if they enter the classroom without confidence that the skills they have will be the right fit for managing students who struggle behaviorally. A Likert scale survey was used for this quantitative study to assess perceived beliefs of educational professionals concerning self-efficacy in managing classroom behavior, and their readiness (ability and willingness) to differentiate approaches to behavior intervention in order to …

An Investigation Of After School Supports: An After-School Program And Its Impact On African American Males Aged 5-13, Leonard M. Brock

Participants in the kindergarten Schools of Choice plan in the Rochester City School District in the second year of the plan' s implementation, who used the plan to choose a school away from …

Involvement Of Coaches In The Campus Judicial Process: Perceptions Of Judicial Affairs Administrators And Athletic Coaches, Tracy Mcfarland

Education Doctoral

High rates of binge drinking among college athletes are particularly troubling to campus administrators because drinking results in greater harms and increased disciplinary outcomes for athletes and because others in the campus community often experience secondhand effects as a result of athletes' binge drinking. The level of trust in the coach-athlete relationship makes athletic coach involvement in the campus judicial process a viable approach to reduce the binge drinking rates of athletes and the associated harms and disciplinary outcomes that they experience. This study explored the perceptions of athletic coaches and judicial affairs administrators regarding coach involvement in the campus …

Applied Behavior Analysis And Autism-Spectrum Disorders, Stephanie Kacurovski May 2009

Applied Behavior Analysis And Autism-Spectrum Disorders, Stephanie Kacurovski

Education Masters

The purpose of my research was to inform others about the facts of applied behavior analysis. Before researching ABA, I had a basic understanding, or I should say misunderstanding, of the use and practice of this treatment. Unfortunately, the mis-practice of ABA contributes to many myths about the treatment. Throughout this paper, the reader should have developed an understanding of applied behavior analysis and how it is used to treat those with ASD.

Do Students With Disabilities Successfully Transition Into The Work Force Or Postsecondary Education?, Kathleen M. Philbin

Education Masters

This research focuses on students with disabilities and their transition and career planning for postsecondary life. The United States federal government has put into law, regulations and guidelines for children with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) requires states and school districts to have a transition plan in place for all students with disabilities. The transition plan should prepare students for further education, employment, and independent living. Transition plans need to take into account the individual student’s interest and abilities. Educators are in agreement that children with disabilities need to have a transition plan. Educators often have different ideas …

I tracked student progress on reading levels using the Degree of Reading Assessment 2 throughout the …

A Framework For Understanding Participation Among African American Adolescents In The Rochester Step-Off Program: A Foundation For Evidence-Based Strategies To Improve Participation, Roderick L. Jones May 2009

A Framework For Understanding Participation Among African American Adolescents In The Rochester Step-Off Program: A Foundation For Evidence-Based Strategies To Improve Participation, Roderick L. Jones

Education Doctoral

Out-of-school time programs (OST programs) are effective at improving social-emotional development and academic performance. Much of the literature on out-of school time programs supports the relationship between levels of impact and participation (Durlak & Weissberg, 2007; Lauer, Akiba, Wilkerson, Apthorp, Snow, & Martin-Glenn, 2006). Research suggests that low-income African Americans benefit from out-of school time programs. However, they are less likely to participate than their White and more affluent counterparts (Simpkins, 2003). This study sought to develop a framework for understanding participation among African American adolescents in the Rochester Step-Off Program (RSO) using the Communities That Care Youth Survey. The …

Concept Maps In The Science Classroom, Paul T. Lubberts Apr 2009

Concept Maps In The Science Classroom, Paul T. Lubberts

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Science curriculums are often contain concepts and vocabulary that students are expected to memorize through reading and listening to lectures. Unfortunately rote learning is often short term without a complete understanding. Concept maps are designed to use a cognitive structure of hierarchical organization with more general concepts occupying higher levels and more specific concepts at lower levels. The map is a diagram that represents conceptual and verbal knowledge in graphical and visual forms. Prior studies have shown concept maps are a meaningful learning tool and an alternative to rote learning when students work cooperatively in small groups. The study investigated …
