In many schools, the percentage of minority students in special education compared to the total number of minority students is surprisingly high. The transition from elementary to middle school presents adolescents with challenges that deter them from becoming learning-focused students. In urban settings, transitioning students are often confronted with issues as they enter middle school and attempt to acclimatize to the new environment. This study explored first-hand experiences of transitioning urban middle school seventh graders at the completion of their first year in a middle school setting. This study combined the literatures of social capital and care. Specifically, the study surveyed alumni perceptions of care from their high school teachers as a measure of teacher-based social capital. In contrast with previous literature that examined care as teacher-based social capital measuring from the teacher perspective, this is the first study to measure care as teacher-based social capital from the perspective of the former student. The study used an established instrument, Teven and McCroskey's (1999) Source Credibility Instrument, in an on-line format to measure perceptions of care from former teachers as the independent variable. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence positional leadership has on satisfaction and retention of second-year students, especially males. To accomplish this, the researcher conducted a mixed-methods study utilizing an online administration of the Student Leadership and Satisfaction Survey (Appendix B) and the completion of focus groups with second-year male positional leaders at Cazenovia College (CAZ), Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS), and Keuka College (KC). The purpose of this study is to examine student achievement in middle school English Language Arts (ELA) through the use of predictive assessments, standard testing, and academic interventions. The researcher determined whether and how teachers at the Benford Middle School use the ThinkLink assessment results to change their instructional practices for students who have scored at levels one and two on the NYS assessment, scores that indicate these students are not proficient in reading at their grade level. Quantitative statistical methods are used to address two research questions about the connection between participation in a school choice program and students' attendance and achievement. These questions are of interest to large urban districts which use expensive school choice plans to desegregate on racial and ethnic or on socioeconomic descriptors of students, in the hope that the resulting voluntary desegregation will benefit student attendance and then achievement. High rates of binge drinking among college athletes are particularly troubling to campus administrators because drinking results in greater harms and increased disciplinary outcomes for athletes and because others in the campus community often experience secondhand effects as a result of athletes' binge drinking. In an effort to comply with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act 2000 (IDEA, 2004), schools are moving toward full inclusion in classrooms to offer students with disabilities the least restrictive environment. This has led to an influx of students on the spectrum of autism in general education classrooms at the middle school level. This capstone focuses on respect within schools in the inner city. The literature review focused on emotional behavioral disorders and poverty, mainly whether or not the two are linked together. To find the presence of respect in the inner city schools, teachers and students were asked fill out a questionnaire giving their opinions on what respect is, giving and receiving of respect and whether or not respect is given at home. Ultimately, it was proven that the definition of respect between teachers and students is very different, thus resulting in a conflict that plays out in the classroom.

Out-of-school time programs (OST programs) are effective at improving social-emotional development and academic performance. Much of the literature on out-of school time programs supports the relationship between levels of impact and participation (Durlak & Weissberg, 2007; Lauer, Akiba, Wilkerson, Apthorp, Snow, & Martin-Glenn, 2006). Research suggests that low-income African Americans benefit from out-of school time programs. Research was conducted to determine what strategies were most effective for teaching students with Asperger’s Syndrome. After reviewing the literature ten strategies were chosen because they came up the most often. These ten strategies were researched in detail and were found to be the most effective when teaching students with Asperger’s Syndrome. A study was then conducted to determine if teachers were actually using the strategies recommended by the literature. The results of the study found that the participants did use a variety of the ten teaching strategies found to be most effective in the research.

The Workplace Covenant ™ is a team-building tool designed to increase trust and commitment among all members of a work group, including the work group manager. The supervisory group of the Operator Services Department at Frontier Communications Corporation along with their manager was assessed to measure current levels of job satisfaction, workplace engagement, team communications, interpersonal relations, and performance. A consultant performed the Workplace Covenant ™ team building intervention with the work group. Then, a final team assessment measured the success of the intervention.

Integrating math and technology has been shown to enhance the educational future of children today. The integration of interactive technology through the use of electronic whiteboards and gaming to enhance student understanding in mathematics was investigated. High school students (N~80) reviewed content through an electronic whiteboard and gaming. It was shown that gaming through the use of electronic whiteboards increased student achievement in mathematics by ensuring a deeper understanding of the material presented.

Merit-based pay provides teachers with monetary bonuses for reaching identified student achievement goals. Performance-based pay provides other types of bonuses to teachers for reaching similar student achievements.
