Shadow Work In Support Of The Adult Developmental Journey, Robin Gregory Mclaughlin
Shadow Work In Support Of The Adult Developmental Journey, Robin Gregory Mclaughlin
Educational Studies Dissertations
In his book, In over our heads: the mental demands of modern life, Kegan (1994) has suggested that the average level of adults’ thinking is more complex today than at previous times in history. This is due, in part, to our increased lifespans, which have enabled complex thinking to evolve and emerge. However, Kegan has also suggested that the demands of the social environment are expanding much faster than the average complexity of adult thinking and learning. In Kegan’s terms, we are “in over our heads.” Using a semi-clinical, semi-structured, qualitative interview with twenty adult learners, this study investigated the …
Simulated Patients' Experiences With Verbal Feedback For First Year Medical Students And Residents: A Grounded Theory Study, Carol Fleishman
Simulated Patients' Experiences With Verbal Feedback For First Year Medical Students And Residents: A Grounded Theory Study, Carol Fleishman
Educational Studies Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of simulated patients (SPs) with the process of providing verbal feedback for first-year medical students and residents during formative simulation activities. Feedback to medical trainees provides a valuable learning context, effecting communication and interpersonal skills which impact healthcare outcomes and patient safety. This qualitative research study used a grounded theory approach based on data from semi-structured interviews with 17 SPs who were casual employees of a standardized patient program for a large academic medical center in the mid-Atlantic region of the USA. The study analyzed what participants said about their …

Byot And Me: Teacher Perceptions Of A Bring Your Own Technology Initiative, Ilana Jones
Educational Studies Dissertations
BYOT and Me: Teacher Perceptions of a Bring Your Own Technology Initiative Ilana Jones Abstract Educational institutions have begun to implement Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT also referred to as Bring Your Own Device or BYOD) initiatives. The purpose of a BYOT implementation is to encourage active student learning resulting in increased student achievement through the use of personal, mobile technology devices. To achieve implementation success, school-leaders and teachers must develop effective strategies to manage the integration of BYOT into classroom teaching practices. The purpose of this research was to explore teacher perceptions regarding the implementation of a school-based BYOT …
God, Family, And Social Justice Education: A Narrative Study Of Adult Learners In The Deep South, Christen Victoria Warrington-Broxton
God, Family, And Social Justice Education: A Narrative Study Of Adult Learners In The Deep South, Christen Victoria Warrington-Broxton
Educational Studies Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study is to explore the social learning experiences and influences on adults’ perceived abilities to teach for social justice in the Deep South. The Deep Southern U.S. is a unique region noted for social, political, economic, and religious conservatism that has strong historical correlations to changes in race and socioeconomic class relations. For these reasons, it is necessary to analyze the reciprocal connection between learning to teach for social justice and adults’ personal lives and relationships. Narrative methods are used to explore the lived experiences of six adult doctoral students taking an advanced course in …
The Resilient Turn: College Students' Perspectives - A Phenomenological Inquiry, Perah Kessman
The Resilient Turn: College Students' Perspectives - A Phenomenological Inquiry, Perah Kessman
Educational Studies Dissertations
This qualitative phenomenology was designed to explore with a sample of undergraduate students in psychology-related majors their perceptions of psychological resilience and the factors they believe contributed to it. While previous studies have examined the construct of resilience in childhood and adolescence, relatively little is known about the phenomenon later in the lifespan. Thus, the rationale for the study stems from the researcher’s wish to fill this gap in knowledge by studying resilience among emerging adults. It was the researcher’s assumption that the knowledge generated from this study would both provide new insights into emerging adult resilience and inform higher …
The Influence Of Nature Relatedness On Decision Making Regarding Mate Selection In College-Educated Young Adults, Nicole Lynn Kras
The Influence Of Nature Relatedness On Decision Making Regarding Mate Selection In College-Educated Young Adults, Nicole Lynn Kras
Educational Studies Dissertations
Research to date has mainly focused on the influence of nature relatedness on a person’s subjective well-being (Nisbet, 2011) and as a predictor of happiness (Zelenski & Nisbet, 2014). There are few, if any, studies that look at the influence of nature relatedness on mate selection. The research question is Does nature relatedness influence mate selection in college-educated adults between the ages of 25 and 40? A secondary goal of this study is to begin to describe the role of the natural environment in the lives of college-educated young adults. Through a modified snowball sampling technique using electronic mail and …
The Experience Of Emerging Adults In An Entry-Level College Hebrew Course, Sarit Moskowitz
The Experience Of Emerging Adults In An Entry-Level College Hebrew Course, Sarit Moskowitz
Educational Studies Dissertations
Most colleges require students to take at least one foreign language course in order to graduate. Some students tend to put this requirement off to the end of their program due to language learning anxiety, and attrition rates in these courses are high. This study asks the following question: How do emerging adult students in an entry-level college Hebrew class describe their experience? Do factors such as awareness of peers and languagelearning anxiety affect their self-reported learning experience? The findings are important to the field of language learning because there are no studies available that specifically evaluate the experience of …
Americans Teaching English: Reflections On Experience As Sojourners In Another Country, Catherine Nameth
Americans Teaching English: Reflections On Experience As Sojourners In Another Country, Catherine Nameth
Educational Studies Dissertations
Sojourners are visitors to another country for a defined period of time where occupation is the primary reason for the visit. Study participants spent at least one academic year teaching English as a Foreign Language at a university in another country. Working in the context of a university in another country means teaching in a system predicated upon the local culture’s values and assumptions. Though all returned sojourners in this study attended a pre-departure orientation which included information about teaching in the assigned host culture, this kind of pre-departure preparation does not mean sojourner adjustment to the host culture will …
Leading Between The Lines: Exploring The Development Of Identity Among Literacy Specialists, Peter Joseph Lancia
Leading Between The Lines: Exploring The Development Of Identity Among Literacy Specialists, Peter Joseph Lancia
Educational Studies Dissertations
This dissertation study addresses the phenomenon of literacy leadership through a multiple case study of four practicing veteran literacy specialists in elementary schools in different New England cities. Using qualitative methods of data collection and analysis, namely extensive interviews and the Voice Centered Relational Method, respectively, narrative portraits were created that suggest themes related to their role, preparation, and ongoing development as well as models of leadership in their schools. In addition, the portraits suggested how the social context of their schools impacted the development of their identity, particularly in the relationships they built among colleagues and principals. With a …
