The percentage of students identified as eligible to receive special education services in the United States has grown from 8.3% in the 1976-77 school year to 14% during the 2018-19 school year (Hussar et al., 2020). Given this level of growth and the myriad of levels of support principals provide for students with disabilities, one would assume that principal preparation programs have adjusted their curriculum to ensure future school administrators are prepared to support every student, including those with disabilities. This dissertation examines the intersection of high school principals and college and career readiness initiatives in five high school contexts. Because school principals are responsible for setting the vision in a school, college and career readiness initiatives have the potential to overlap significantly with the principal’s direction of the school. This dissertation describes a research project that examined parent involvement in schools as influenced by servant leadership. Student achievement, as well as parent and family involvement, is largely influenced by leadership styles (Fullan, 1998, Thoonan, Sleegers, Oort, Pettsma, & Geijesel, 2011). Although various influences on parent involvement have been suggested in research, including student demographics and state and district policy and school structure, the undercurrent of organizational leadership continues to remain hidden (MacNeil, Prater, & Busch, 2009). This research study, while highly personalized, contributes in various ways to the literature on public schooling. First, this study includes a critique of the public schools and posits that while public schools are the problem, potentially public schools may also be the solution. This allows multiple and novel interpretations of the critique of public schools.
