This literature review examines research studies that evaluated the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) simulated interventions in people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) including their enjoyment of the process and their ability to transfer VR learning to real-life situations. VR provides a safe and controllable environment that implements realistic computer-based simulated interactions that allow for repeated skill practice and gives participants the ability to progress at their own pace. Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of neurodevelopmental syndromes characterized by deficits in communication, social interaction, imagination and sensory processing. The prevalence of ASD has increased significantly throughout recent decades. Given their concern about the diagnosis and their frustration that effective medical approaches are lacking, many parents and families of children with ASD have turned to alternative treatments and therapies for regulation of the behaviors and deficits observed in children with ASD.
