Can a succinct "synopsis" laboratory report format provide students with an equivalent learning experience to the lengthier, introduction/results/conclusion, "traditional" laboratory report format? A convenience sample of 56 Iowa State University industrial technology students was randomized into two groups; one was required to write five synopsis reports followed by four traditional reports and the other was required to write five traditional reports followed by four synopsis reports. This study examined whether there were relationships between students' perceptions of course-related interaction and their course satisfaction within the learner-centered paradigm in distance education. To study these relationships, the researcher developed the Students' Perceived Interaction Survey (SPIS) to examine nine separate hypotheses about the nature of course-related interaction. This dissertation focuses on the human-computer interaction elements of task presentation and task structure in the programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). Task presentation methods that were explored included a natural language (GE Fanuc's State Logic), and a mixed modality language (GE Fanuc's Logicmaster Relay Ladder Logic). This investigation compares academic achievement and employability skills of high school students enrolled in applied academics courses versus traditional courses. Outcomes from three American College Testing Work Keys assessment tests--Applied Mathematics (AM), Applied Technology (AT), and Reading for Information (RFI)--were used as measures of employability skills. This study investigated the effectiveness of a computer-based lesson used before versus after formal lecture and examined students' difficulties in learning the function concepts of the C programming language. The subjects were fifteen university students who were randomly assigned to two treatment groups that received different instructional sequences. The subjects completed questionnaires, a pretest, the computer-based lesson and a posttest.
