Increasing Adolescents' Awareness Of The Impacts Of Social Networking Sites, Karina Vega Jul 2021

Increasing Adolescents' Awareness Of The Impacts Of Social Networking Sites, Karina Vega

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many adolescents are unaware of the impacts that social networking sites may have on them. According to Anderson and Jiang (2018), 95% of adolescents have access to a smartphone. Furthermore, Anderson and Jiang (2018) stated that 45% of adolescents are engaged with online activities on a continual basis. Social networking sites may affect adolescents' view of their body image and lower their self esteem. Anderson and Jiang (2018) discussed the difference between female and male adolescents' use of social media, reporting that 50% of female adolescents engage with social media on a continual basis compared to 39% of male adolescents.

Increasing Financial Literacy Awareness Among High School Seniors, Ismael Loza Martinez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This paper attempts to bring an awareness to the lack of financial literacy education in high school curriculum. Over 50 percent of all high school graduates go into the workforce or college lacking sufficient financial literacy education to effectively manage their money, their savings, and credit. Most high schools offer personal finance and economics courses as an elective rather than a requirement. Many of these high schools have a very high student body population which come from socioeconomically impacted backgrounds. A lesson plan was made in an attempt to educate 12'th grade senior AVID students on the topic of financial …

Increasing Healthy Coping In At Risk Adolescents, Francisca F. Rios

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

At-risk youth lack healthy coping skills needed to manage stress. This lack of skills leaves adolescents vulnerable to more risky behaviors such as substance use. Therefore, I created a two-day lesson on healthy coping skills for adolescents at Mount Toro High School in Salinas, California.

Increasing Growth Mindsets In Rural Adolescents, Jessica Hernandez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Individuals who have fixed mindsets may be pessimistic, lack self-esteem, and have a poor self-image because they believe that their abilities are fixed and cannot be changed. Many adolescents who grow up in small, rural, isolated areas may develop a fixed mindset because of few opportunities in their immediate environment and little change or progress evident in their communities. In order to address the potential development of fixed mindsets, I created a two-day lesson on cultivating growth versus fixed mindsets for high school juniors at Needles High School in Needles, California.

Increasing Adolescent Girls’ Awareness Of Intimate Partner Violence, Kacie Cox May 2019

Increasing Adolescent Girls’ Awareness Of Intimate Partner Violence, Kacie Cox

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Most girls often enter into their first romantic relationship during adolescence. Unfortunately, research indicates that some of these girls fall victim to abuse and violence from their romantic partners, known as Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). There is often little to no discussion regarding IPV until something serious occurs. To address this lack of awareness, I created a 2-session program for teenaged Girl Scouts from Central California Coast troops about what IPV is, why it happens, and how to prevent it.

Improving Media Literacy Among Ninth Grade Avid Students, Sierra Byrd May 2018

Improving Media Literacy Among Ninth Grade Avid Students, Sierra Byrd

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Media literacy is an important skill to learn in an information-saturated environment. Adolescents, who are vulnerable to media messages both online and off-line, would benefit from learning how to find credible sources and information. To address this need I conducted a lesson about media literacy over the course of three sessions with a ninth grade AVID class. The students acquired media literacy skills and learned how to apply it to their daily lives.
