A Comparison of Solvent and Water-Borne Alkyd Coatings Abstract
Conventional solvent based alkyd coatings have gone out of favor due to concerns over volatile organic compound (VOC) content. However, due to recent focus on renewable raw materials, alkyds are making a comeback in waterborne form. Water based alkyd coatings are known to have poor shelf stability and corrosion resistance, as well as other problems during the formulation process. This project focused on comparing solvent borne to two types of water-borne alkyds, water reducible alkyds and alkyds emulsions. The purpose was to understand the differences between the three types of alkyds …

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Curriculum For College Students, Danielle M. Colangelo, Alexis K. Sepulveda
Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Curriculum For College Students, Danielle M. Colangelo, Alexis K. Sepulveda
Kinesiology and Public Health
The recreational use of prescription drugs has been increasingly common in university communities (Office of National Drug Control Policy, 2015). Students may abuse prescription drugs to get high, study longer or sleep. A survey conducted by Kinesiology students used snowball sampling to assess the number of Cal Poly students recreationally using prescription drugs and their knowledge of prescription drug abuse (Colangelo & Sepulveda, 2015). The assessment showed 30.7% of students had abused prescription drugs in the last six months. There was an increase in abuse between college freshmen (19.2%), college sophomores (41.4%) and juniors (44.3%) (Colangelo & Sepulveda, 2015). This …

A Survey Of Student Interest In Construction Management Students’ Involvement In Design Village Competition, Candace Nicole Stephens
Construction Management
Included in this paper are the results of two surveys that were designed to assess student interest in Construction Management students’ participation in the annual Design Village Competition hosted by Cal Poly every spring. Sixty-five Architecture and Architectural Engineering, and thirty Construction Management undergraduate students completed these surveys at the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED), Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The overall student interest level in both groups was majority positive. To delve deeper into potential benefits and obstacles on this subject, along with quantitative data from the surveys, there is also qualitative data from faculty member interviews, …

World Languages and Cultures
This project attempts to outline my experience teaching English in the San Luis Obispo County Jail as part of a seven-week internship. It will outline various teaching methods that I found useful in one-on-one settings. I will discuss the flexibility required to work within the limitations imposed by the jail, as well as linguistic and cultural obstacles associated with teaching a native Spanish speaker. Lastly, I intend to advocate for the implementation of more jail programs that can be accessed by non-native English speakers.
Although this project's core is founded in seven weeks of ninety-minute instructional sessions, it will also …

Agricultural Education: Graduate Internship Reports
The internship included the acquisition of a variety of validation documents, plus the development of a school and community garden. The garden provides for hands-on student learning. Students involved in the project harvest the fresh produce and distribute it to families of students who do not have access to fresh produce. Some produce from the school garden was donated to the local food bank in the area. Teaching sustainable practices is essential to this educational program for students in the middle school.
Teaching Numerical Methods In The Context Of Galaxy Mergers, Maria Kourjanskaia
Teaching Numerical Methods In The Context Of Galaxy Mergers, Maria Kourjanskaia
Physics
Methods of teaching numerical methods to solve ordinary differential equations in the context of galaxy mergers were explored. The research published in a paper by Toomre and Toomre in 1972 describing the formation of galactic tails and bridges from close tidal interactions was adapted into a project targeting undergraduate physics students. Typically undergraduate physics students only take one Computational Physics class in which various techniques and algorithms are taught. Although it is important to study computational physics techniques, it is just as important to apply this knowledge to a problem that is representative of what computational physics researchers are investigating …
