Motivating reluctant readers and changing their attitude toward reading in order for students to be successful requires educators to discover the interests, dreams, and goals, of their students. The purpose of this project was to develop and design a model, secondary-level curriculum for a Teaching Academy program. To accomplish this purpose, a review of current literature related to Teaching Academies was conducted. Related information from selected schools, school districts, and private organizations was obtained and analyzed. Additionally the investigator, Michelle M. Bryant, attended training sessions and conferences hosted by the Teachers Recruiting Future Teachers.

An Administrator's Guide For Involving Parents In The Education Of Students Enrolled In The Yakima Valley Community College Upward Bound Project, Marcus S. Coomer

The purpose of this project was to develop a director's guide for involving parents or primary care-givers in the education of students from underrepresented populations enrolled in the Yakima Valley Community College (YVCC) Upward Bound project. To accomplish this purpose, a review of current literature and research was conducted. Additionally, materials and related information from selected Upward Bound projects were obtained and analyzed.

The purpose of this project was to design a process model detailing the evaluation procedure for a high school self-study required for state and regional accreditation. To accomplish this purpose, a review of current literature regarding school self-study, restructuring and educational reform was conducted. Yakima Alternative Education Program: Serving At-Risk Students In Grades 9-12, Earl Steven Lee

The project describes and analyzes the Alternative School program of the Yakima (WA) School District. The project reviews the nine components that make up the alternative programs for the Yakima School District: (1) Stanton, (2) Outreach, (3) Project 107, (4) MAS, (5) The Place, (6) Detention Home, (7) Crossroads, (8) Key-OIC and (9) Stride. The project will identify the critical attributes of each program in an effort to clearly understand how they each promote the educational growth of high risk students in grades 9-12. Techniques, instructional materials and educational resources used by teachers and students will be discussed.

Many students who enter high school at Milton-Freewater, Oregon, are unable to do satisfactory work because they can not read. This situation, although common in secondary schools in the United States, must be improved. At the present time the student whose reading ability is two to six years below his grade level is being placed in a reading class.The purpose of this paper was (1) to survey the general principles of good diagnosis, (2) to determine the criteria for selecting suitable tests, and (3) to suggest suitable tools for appraisal to be used by the classroom teacher.
