Students’ Perceptions About Gamified Methods In English As A Second Language Acquisition, Se He Hwang

This qualitative research study will examine whether game-based learning is effective for helping to learn English as a second language (ESL) in the United States. This study will ask participants, particularly adult second language learners, about their perceptions of high levels of stress and anxiety when learning English. The study will also investigate whether game-play motivated students learn English in class. Data collected in this study will be based on interviews, questionnaires, and observations of the classrooms and game play, and the results demonstrated that participants’ interest in the game created active involvement in game-play in class.

The purposes of the study were to investigate the process of self-regulated learning and the effects of an intervention program on self-regulated learning designed for second language (L2) learners. 120 participants who were sophomores majoring in English education at a university in an Asian country were randomly assigned to either the experimental group or control group. The self-regulated learning intervention was composed of six weekly two-hour training sessions that focus on five main variables of self-regulatory process: goal setting, self-efficacy, time and study environment management, language learning strategies, and attribution. The purposes of this study were to study the effect of oral reading-to-self on adult English Language Learners' oral fluency and their perception toward oral reading-to-self. This experimental study used a pretest-posttest design. The participants (N = 63) were recruited and randomly assigned to a control group (n = 30) and an experimental group (n = 33). This study investigated the learning styles of ESL students (students who learn English as a second language). The focus in this study was on the ESL Arab Gulf (Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, and United Arab Emirates) students who study English as a second language in Intensive English Language Centers (IELCs) in the United States. The study explored the ESL Arab Gulf students' learning style preference and how they are affected by different variables such as cultural background, gender, and language level in IELCs.
