This thesis examines how a group of lecturers who taught in a university preparation course designed for Indigenous Australians thought about what `academic literacy' meant. Lecturers were asked to consider the relationships between the meanings of `academic literacy' , curriculum, and the considerable problems the Course was facing in order to remain viable. My research goal was to better understand what alignment of people, ideas, and other important entities would be required to develop a sustainable program for Indigenous people seeking an alternative pathway into university degrees.

The purpose of this study is to explore and describe the experiences of a specific group of arts workers in an isolated rural community in the South West of Western Australia. These participants have all worked in the community as arts workers for an extended period of time. Through phenomenological research, the telling of these workers stories, it is anticipated that the research will highlight, strengthen and enrich the political and economic positions of these workers. This is a qualitative, descriptive study of group processes in classes of adult language learners, viewed from the perspective of practising teachers. The study has an internal narrative which takes the reader through the process of the research, from the initial question raised by a casual classroom conversation to the discussion chapter which questions a number of assumptions underlying current English language teaching practices within western educational contexts. The study falls into two distinct phases.
