Several factors make up the successful instructional experience in online higher education classes. With the advanced offerings in online learning, educational institutions are compelled to innovate all aspects of their online classes (U.S. Department of Education, 2016). The innovation can lead to a higher caliber learning environment. This paper advances a simple model for Instructors to follow, an Instructional Online Model (IOM), with the intent of improving student engagement, knowledge retention, leading to increased business profit. Instructors who model the discussed techniques may find increased student’s satisfaction with their courses, leading to the students pursuing further online education. Technological advancement …
The Impact Of Project-Based Learning In The Secondary Classroom, Alan Kies
The Impact Of Project-Based Learning In The Secondary Classroom, Alan Kies
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
How to increase student engagement in the classroom and prepare the students for the future are questions that teachers have been pondering for decades. Over the years, many different student-centered teaching methods have been introduced to varying degrees of success. This literature review investigates one of the student-centered teaching methods that has been shown to have positive benefits for students in secondary classrooms, project-based learning (PBL). In a PBL unit or lesson, the students are investigating a real-world question or problem and then presenting their learning in a final project. Through the creation of the final product, the students will …

Student Engagement: What Is The Best Way To Motivate Students In The Secondary Classroom?, Michiah Arguello
Honors Projects
In the secondary education classroom, the question often arises: How do we engage our students? Often, we are faced with heads down on desks, glassy eyes, and students who don’t remember content taught to them the day before. How can we engage them? How can we motivate them to want to learn?
In this study, I will examine five procedures determined by educators to enhance student engagement. In each section, I will discuss the procedure, discuss what the procedure’s steps are and how to approach it, and share a way I have utilized this procedure and reflect on its effectiveness. …
Lower-Secondary Students’ Civic Engagement At School: Results From Iccs 2016, Wolfram Schulz
Lower-Secondary Students’ Civic Engagement At School: Results From Iccs 2016, Wolfram Schulz
Civics and Citizenship Assessment
Based on survey data from the latest implementation of the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS 2016), this paper explores the extent of students’ civic engagement at school, their beliefs about their own ability to engage and their perceptions of the value of student participation, as well as their willingness to engage in future civic activities at school. Where possible, it compares results with those from the previous ICCS survey in 2009, and it also analyses which factors related to home background, school context and students’ beliefs about engagement explain variation in their willingness to participate at school in …

Surviving And Thriving At A University In The United Kingdom, Roxanne S. Duvivier, Gina Oswald, Lindsey Steller, Kate Bumhoffer
Human Services Faculty Publications
While considerable research on college student surviving and thriving has been conducted in the United States, fewer studies exist that examine these phenomenon multinationally. This mixed methods study, conducted at a large multi-campus university in the United Kingdom, examines factors purported to contribute to college student retention and engagement in a British context. Data were collected and analysed in the five theme categories of belonging, student support services, academic engagement, decision-making and resilience. Significant differences were found in student engagement by metropolitan vs. suburban campus, and in levels of engagement in academic and student life by gender.
Consensus To Co-Create Curricula And Build Community, Nini Hayes
Consensus To Co-Create Curricula And Build Community, Nini Hayes
Backward by Design Mini-Studies
This project was about using consensus to co-create curricula and build classroom community. I worked with students to narrow their study of focus to two concepts, Neoliberalism and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy. This co-creating and buy in from students really encouraged them to be present and find the course relevant to their work as environmental educators.

Building A Successful Community & Family Engagement Pilot: Advocating For Student Success, Denise Manning
Building A Successful Community & Family Engagement Pilot: Advocating For Student Success, Denise Manning
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
I am an educator making a career transition from classroom instruction to a community and family engagement role. In this synthesis I describe a pilot program that integrates what I’ve learned about schools, critical and creative thinking and what is known about successful community and family engagement. The goal of the program is to provide families access to educational opportunities in marginalized social groups and thus help educational resources become more equitable. I hope that the pilot program will help me secure a rewarding job.
Indicators Of Civic Engagement Among Lower Secondary Students, John Ainley, Wolfram Schulz, Eveline Gebhardt
Indicators Of Civic Engagement Among Lower Secondary Students, John Ainley, Wolfram Schulz, Eveline Gebhardt
Civics and Citizenship Assessment
Educational systems, school and teachers seek to prepare young people to understand the society they live in, to engage with its political and social issues and become actively involved as citizens in later adult life. There is a consensus that formal education influences the extent of adult civic engagement (Pancer, 2015). This is reflected in the fact that many countries include civic learning as a goal of school education either as a distinct subject or through several subjects (Ainley et al., 2013). More broadly, civic engagement of citizens is seen as a central characteristic of a democratic society and refers …

Mlearning: Powerful Learning Tools For Eap In Higher Education, Rania M Rafik Khalil
English Language and Literature
In many of today’s private higher education institutions, it is difficult to find students without a mobile phone, a PC tablet, or an ipad. At the same time, it is even more difficult to find students in higher education who use their mobile devices for academic purposes. Research indicates that English language instructors in higher education are not necessarily advocates of mobile use in the teaching classroom (Dashtesatani, 2016; Ally, 2013; Stockwell, 2012). However, in recent, years, higher education institutions are advocating the use of mobile learning for English language learning and promoting it as a “powerful learning aid” (Chen …
When Students Design Their Own Games: A Failed Experiment In A First-Year Seminar, Chad Raymond
When Students Design Their Own Games: A Failed Experiment In A First-Year Seminar, Chad Raymond
Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers
This paper compares indicators of student engagement across different sections of a first-year seminar taught in Fall 2017. As part of an active learning pedagogy, students in the author’s sections of the course were clustered into teams that designed and played games on refugee migration, aid, and resettlement. Students in seminar sections taught by other faculty members experienced traditional forms of instruction that did not include game design. Data from a survey administered to students in different seminar sections did not indicate an association between game design and student engagement. Further investigation revealed substantial declines in the results of student …

Innovations In Occupational Therapy Education: The Centralized Service Learning Model, Lauren E. Milton, Robyn Otty
College of Health & Human Services (TUN) Publications and Research
Partnerships between community organizations and engaged university members creates realistic learning experiences for occupational therapy students while encouraging civic responsibility. The authors propose service learning as the core of an innovative course design framework using the Centralized Service Learning Model (CSLM). Three phases are described. Phase One provides a description of the CSLM using a generalizable model, with specific application within existing occupational therapy program coursework. Phase Two provides leadership opportunities for a subsequent cohort of students within the curriculum. Finally, Phase Three integrates faculty scholarship. To understand students’ knowledge-level awareness, a survey based on course objectives can be administered, …
Listening To Equity-Seeking Perspectives: How Students’ Experiences Of Pedagogical Partnership Can Inform Wider Discussions Of Student Success, Alison Cook-Sather
Listening To Equity-Seeking Perspectives: How Students’ Experiences Of Pedagogical Partnership Can Inform Wider Discussions Of Student Success, Alison Cook-Sather
Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship
Discussions in higher education have proliferated in recent years regarding not only how to recruit a greater diversity of students but also how to support their success. The voices of students themselves, particularly those students traditionally underrepresented in and underserved by higher education, have important contributions to make to these discussions. This article draws on a larger study of the perspectives of undergraduate students who identify as members of equity-seeking groups (e.g., students who are racialized, LGBTQ+ and first generation) and who have collaborated with faculty in a bi-college, classroom-focused, pedagogical partnership program in the United States. Using constant comparison/grounded …
“Stickiness”: Gauging Students’ Attention To Online Learning Activities, Ainslie Robinson, David Cook
“Stickiness”: Gauging Students’ Attention To Online Learning Activities, Ainslie Robinson, David Cook
Education Papers and Journal Articles
Purpose: Online content developers use the term “stickiness” to refer to the ability of their online service or game to attract and hold the attention of users and create a compelling and magnetic reason for them to return repeatedly (examples include virtual pets and social media). In business circles, the same term connotes the level of consumer loyalty to a particular brand. This paper aims to extend the concept of “stickiness” not only to describe repeat return and commitment to the learning “product”, but also as a measure of the extent to which students are engaged in online learning …
