Last spring I announced that we would take time this year to focus some of our thinking and conversation on the topic of diversity, equity, and inclusion. There are many reasons for us to direct our efforts to this topic: the changing demographics in our society and the need to provide a welcoming environment to a diverse student body, faculty and staff; our responsibility to prepare students for living in diverse communities and working in diverse workplaces; and our desire to prepare citizens who will be sensitive to social injustices and motivated to right them. Assessing Diverse Community College Students' Vocabulary Comprehension Through Context Construction, Andrea S. Salis

Sixty-nine community college students completed a study which assessed their vocabulary comprehension based on their ability to define randomly selected Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) words and construct their own sentences that illustrated the meaning of the word. This research assessed students’ vocabulary comprehension through their ability to construct context. The information provided from this study demonstrates the variability of students’ vocabulary comprehension. The results of this repeated measures design, demonstrated that students mean scores were very low (5.67, 4.54, 5.54, and 5.91 out of a possible score of 50) for vocabulary definition and comprehension. The authors examine progress in strengthening the Diversity agenda in a school of education within a private Christian university. This agenda is informed by external academic accrediting organizations and principles of social justice congruent with the historical roots of the university. Special emphasis is placed on the unique challenges of confronting how privilege manifests itself in seemingly homogeneous environments. The ultimate goal of the authors is to promote moving beyond cosmetic compliance with accreditation obligations towards a metabolized second order change reflecting internal paradigm shifts in which social justice is a central motivating factor in one’s vocation.

At some point over the next 10 to 12 years, the nation’s public school student body will have no one clear racial or ethnic majority. But the makeup of the nation’s teacher workforce is not keeping up with these changing demographics. At the national level, students of color make up more than 40 percent of the public school population. In contrast, teachers of color—teachers who are not non-Hispanic white—are only 17 percent of the teaching force. The main goal of this report is to document and assess the hiring and retention of Latino faculty, from all the different combined nationalities that fall within this particular U.S. Census rubric,at the selected sample of SUNY institutions. This is doneby rank and (where possible) by gender, beginning between 2000 and 2002 and ending either in 2009 or 2010 (depending upon the campus). Much of this data is compared tothat for African American, Asian, and non-Latino white faculty categories at the same SUNY institutions. This study took place at the University of Wyoming, located in the rural mountain West. The University of Wyoming, with approximately 13,000 students, is the only four-year university in the state.The teacher education population of the College of Education is about 600, and demographically, this population is about 90% White, predominately female, and from rural communities across the state and other states that border Wyoming. Likewise, most school districts in the state of Wyoming are less diverse (ethnically, racially, and linguistically) than the national averages. This study compared changes in the intercultural competency of two groups of undergraduate students in several sections of a course, Human Relations in a Multicultural Society. The hypothesis for this study was that the intentional, cross-cultural experiences of students have an impact on the cultural competency of each student. The course in this study was designed as a response to the increasingly diverse population in the United States in terms of race, ethnicity, and culture. BACKGROUND In order to continue to improve Western’s campus climate and employee engagement and to enhance the University’s commitment to diversity, President Shepard facilitated the distribution of a Staff Engagement and Diversity Climate Survey (Staff Survey) on October 31, 2012. Western had conducted similar studies for faculty and students, and it was critical that the views and opinions of classified and professional staff also be collected in order to identify areas in need of improvement, work on those areas, and ascertain progress. In this paper, we narratively describe our perspectives and experiences as two female professors teaching courses on family diversity. We begin by outlining our subjectivities, including an explicit identification of the ways in which our identities are privileged versus not privileged. We then use a feminist lens to discuss the teaching goals and strategies used in our courses. The teaching goals discussed in this paper include: self-awareness of the instructor, reducing hierarchy in the classroom, empowering students, and caring for the individual student. One tangible benefit of working at a university is the number of opportunities for continuing education. At LMU, these resources abound for white-­‐collar, professional staff. But results from a 2010 survey initiated by the library and ITS indicated that the majority of respondents from LMU Facilities employees were unaware that library and technology workshops (which take place year-­round) were offered at all.
