Educational leaders have a substantial degree of control over students and generally have a tremendous influence on the decisions that they make. District administrators are already involved in comprehensive efforts to stem sexual harassment, teen violence and bullying; therefore, they may be well positioned to identify and address the problem of teen dating violence. Unfortunately, school district failure to take action is far too common, despite the statutory duty to ensure the safety of all students during school hours and at school sponsored events. In this urban midwestern public school district, families of Native Indian students, pre-K through grade 12, attend four multigenerational gatherings like this one during the school year—one of a number of events orchestrated by the Native Indian Centered Education (NICE) program. NICE is a program in the school district that partners with families to provide Native-centric educational opportunities for preschool children. Family events such as the storytelling activity in the opening vignette represent trends in early childhood education: building family-school-community partnerships to enhance learning and build family resources. The all- Native-Indian preschool program is unusual and rare in urban areas. …

Passive Vibration On The Legs Reduces Peripheral And Systemic Arterial Stiffness, Alexei Wong, Marcos A. Sanchez-Gonzalez, Ryan Gil, Florence Vicil, Song-Young Park, Arturo Figueroa

Intermittent leg exercise (10 × 1-min sets) with whole-body vibration (WBV) decreases brachial-ankle pulse-wave velocity (baPWV)1 and leg PWV (legPWV) but not aortic PWV.2 As baPWV is an index of systemic arterial stiffness3 mainly influenced by aortic PWV (∼58%) and legPWV (∼23%),4 previously published results1, 2 suggest that WBV affects baPWV through peripheral but not central PWV. The post-exercise decrease in PWV is associated with vasodilation in the exercised limb.5, 6 Similarly, intermittent WBV (3 × 3-min sets)7 or passive vibration (PV)8 has been shown to increase blood flow in …

For a number of years, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has focused on building a statewide partnership with mathematics teachers, schools, districts, and educational service units, to raise K-12 student achievement in mathematics. During this session, we will share a variety of our efforts to build professional communities of educators, including the NSF-funded grants NebraskaNOYCE, NebraskaMATH, and the Math in the Middle Institute Partnership. We will engage participants in a discussion of necessary and sufficient conditions to support such professional communities, and how such conditions can be created or worked around.

Using Electronic Portfolios To Measure Growth In Leadership Standards And Dispositions, Peter J. Smith

This study analyzed the pretest and posttest data from ISLLC Standards surveys and the Administrator Disposition Index surveys to determine the growth in knowledge, skills, and dispositions of the candidates in the Masters/Endorsement program in Educational Administration and Supervision at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (n = 135). The data were collected from electronic student portfolios when the candidates first entered the program and again when they were enrolled in the end of program practicum field experience. The Modern Language Association’s (MLA) urgent appeal for the restructuring of the undergraduate language curriculum, “Foreign Languages and Higher Education: New Structures for a Changed World,” emphasizes a need for language departments to enrich their upper-division course offerings beyond the traditional literary studies model in order to attract and retain broader interest in language learning among students with diverse academic interests and needs. Citing the National Science Foundation’s 2003 Survey of College Graduates, it stresses that only 6.1% of undergraduates whose primary major is a foreign language later achieve doctorate degrees and concludes that departments should provide upper-division language courses …

The combined goals of recruiting and retaining effective teachers are often difficult to realize due to fluctuating student enrollments and class-size targets, teaching-load norms or requirements, and budgetary and resource constraints. While schools and districts market and recruit bright new teachers to the field, they too, struggle to maintain enticing career development standards that would retain the most effective teachers in the district (Guirano, Santibanez, & Daley, 2006). With the high turnover in schools, student achievement suffers. Teacher attrition has grown by 50% over the past fifteen years. The national teacher turnover rate has risen to 16.8%. The Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) is a major initiative of the Council for Aid to Education. The CLA offers a value-added, constructed-response approach to the assessment of higher-order skills, such as critical thinking and written communication. The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) and the University of Agder (UiA), Norway, are collaborating on the creation of an undergraduate certificate in Information Technology Administration. The certificate is designed for students who are interested in managing the complex technical infrastructure of today's organizations. The certificate will consist of approximately 15 credit hours of hands-on courses, covering such areas as systems administration, network administration, database administration, security administration, and distributed systems. For the last three years, the campus has recognized that the current general education curriculum was complex, difficult to assess, and the overall goals for the curriculum were not clearly defined or understood by the faculty, staff, and students. The curriculum nor goals had not been seriously discussed in almost 20 years. In order to address those issues, teams from UNO attended the AAC& U General Education Institutes as well as conferences on General Education and Assessment. This Enrollment Statistical Summary provides delivery-site information. Administrative-site headcounts, since they are most closely related to the budgetary authority exercised by the campus, are officially reported to the Board of Regents. Delivery site reporting counts all students, including those in UNL programs delivered at UNO, but excludes UNO programs delivered in Lincoln (CPACS programs). Administrative-site reporting counts students enrolled in UNO programs only (including the CPACS programs delivered in Lincoln).

The Office of Institutional Research has found delivery-site counts to be the most frequently requested figures by campus units for academic and administrative planning purposes. The purpose of this summary …

Impact Of Passive Vibration On Pressure Pulse Wave Characteristics, M A. Sanchez-Gonzalez, A Wong, F Vicil, R Gil, Song-Young Park, A Figueroa

The augmentation index (AIx), a marker of wave reflection, decreases following acute leg exercise. Passive vibration (PV) causes local vasodilation that may reduce AIx. This study investigated the effects of acute PV on wave reflection and aortic hemodynamics. In a crossover fashion 20 (M=9, F=11) healthy young (22±3 year) participants were randomized to 10 min PV or no vibration control (CON) trials. Subjects rested in the supine position with their legs over a vibration platform for the entire session. Radial waveforms were obtained by applanation tonometry before and after 3 min (Post-3) and 30 min (Post-30) of PV (∼5.37 G) …
