Calculus-Based Physics Exploratory Study: Summary Report, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Documents

During the 1992-1993 academic year a number of elements (national level surveys and research reports, IMSA’s professional development focus; a climate of reflective inquiry) focused attention on the participation and achievement of females in mathematics and science at a national level and, specifically, the participation and achievement of females in mathematics and science at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. These elements served as the catalyst for the calculus-based physics exploratory study.

Report Of The Strategic Planning Team: Executive Summary, Stephanie Pace Marshall

On December 4, 1987, a representative group of faculty and all administrators convened for a day to reflect on our past, discuss our present, and begin to make plans for the future of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. At that time, we discussed the need to engage in a formal process by which we would define who we were, what we were about, what we valued, and how we would direct our resources, (both financial and human), to achieve the goals that were inherent in the establishment of this unique institution.

This brief, but nonetheless intense discussion, resulted in …

1993-94 Calculus-Based Physics/Mechanics Study: Statement, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Documents

In February 1994, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) was featured in USA Weekend and on NBC-TV's Dateline in reports on gender equity in education. The reports centered on the work of David and Myra Sadker, professors of education at American University. The Sadkers' new book, Failing at Fairness: How America's Schools Cheat Girls, was published in February

The February 4-6 USA Weekend, the nationwide weekend newspaper insert, cited IMSA in a cover story by the Sadkers. Three IMSA students were pictured on the cover. The Dateline report by anchorwoman Jane Pauley aired February 8.

Both reports …

1993-94 Annual Report, TransForming Through Connections, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Annual Reports

It is our privilege to share with you the eighth annual report of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. The 1993-94 year was a turning point for IMSA and our annual report helps to tell the story of our continued transformation from that of "school" to that of "educational laboratory/resource for the state of Illinois."

During 1993-94, the board of trustees officially approved a new strategic plan and mission statement declaring a bold commitment to the transformation of mathematics and science teaching and learning through connections. To answer that call, the Academy radically redesigned its internal organizational structure and as …

Annual Report 1993-1994, Imsa Fund

IMSA Fund Reports

As president of the IMSA Fund board of directors, it is my privilege to share with you, our shareholders, the 1993-94 annual report of the IMSA Fund for Advancement of Education.

This was another banner year for the IMSA Fund. For the second year in a row, we raised more than $1 million in a given fiscal year, putting us over the $6 million mark since 1986. Donors such as Ameritech Illinois, The Hitachi Foundation and the Harris Family Foundation led the way in making strong commitments to IMSA's problem-based learning and distance learning initiatives. We are grateful that you …

Imsa 1994-95 Profile, Office Of College And Academic Counseling

IMSA Profile

"Real changes in education come from need and leadership. America has lots of the former and little of the latter... Occasionally, there is an opportunity to build an exemplar, one that is so powerful that it shows clearly what can be done by showing what is being done. IMSA is becoming that exemplar. When it is fully realized, it will be a blueprint for how to reconstruct education. ..." — North Central Accreditation Report, conclusion*
