The New Techie: The Times They Are A-Changing, And Techies Along With Them, Melodee Landis
The New Techie: The Times They Are A-Changing, And Techies Along With Them, Melodee Landis
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
It’s great to be a former English teacher working in the world of technology — although it hasn’t always been pretty. When I first started working in technology (in the late 1980s), techies greeted me with wary disdain. I didn’t know the lingo, I didn’t live to be the first to know about the next hardware release, and my idea of a good time on Saturday night was to spend time with a warm, breathing being, not a keyboard and a screen. Furthermore, I was much too verbal, too in-your-face. I lacked that certain je ne c’est quoi, that cool …
Using Online Learning Resources To Promote Deeper Learning, Roger Bruning, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, Neal Grandgenett
Using Online Learning Resources To Promote Deeper Learning, Roger Bruning, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, Neal Grandgenett
Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
This paper describes research on four web-based learning applications that employ a variety of assessment approaches and student tracking and data aggregation mechanisms. These applications are aimed at promoting deeper learning in web-based learning applications and courses and at facilitating a research-based, design experiment approach to prototype development and improvement. Developmental research on two of these tools, Affinity Learning and Critical Thinking, is discussed in this paper. Affinity Learning uses database-driven software to capture the teaching skill of a master teacher. Students are guided through online activities and assessments in accord with their skills and rate of learning. When a …

Affinity Learning In Mathematics, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, Neal Grandgenett
Affinity Learning In Mathematics, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, Neal Grandgenett
Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Teaching complex subjects such as mathematical modeling is intrinsically challenging. It is more so in a typical classroom setting. In this paper, we explore the use of technology to provide an electronic tutor that interacts with both teacher and student to provide a personalized and focused learning experience. Affinity Learning is an environment that captures the skills of a master teacher in a dynamic but simple technical embodiment and presents lessons and assessments online to a student. Initial results not only indicate that learning has occurred, but also distinguish male from female performance and give interesting insight into the learning …

Technology As A Mirror, Judith A. Ramaley

Higher Education
IN CYBERSPACE instructors are more exposed, vulnerable, and less able to retain a veil of superior knowledge and expertise that has given scholars a sense of identity. We can, however, deepen our understanding, authentically practice the disciplines that we love, and enter new relationships to the learners who entrust themselves to our care. This I learned from faculty I consulted at the University of Vermont. And this is how technology can influence--and further--the aims of education.

Bridging The Gap: Connecting School And Community With Service Learning, Sarah K. Edwards
Bridging The Gap: Connecting School And Community With Service Learning, Sarah K. Edwards
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
Why do I even look for teaching ideas in the education catalogs that fill my mailbox? I know that these offerings of prefabricated units and generic novel activities will not satisfy the desires of my students. Looking around my orderly classroom, I confess that I am probably the only one who adores the posters with colorful scenes from my favorite poems. During my past ten years as an English teacher, I have found myself in a mental tug-of-war as to how to connect my students with the state curriculum standards. Finally, in the abyss of Internet lessons and teaching seminars, …

Institutionalized Service-Learniing In The 50 States, Kathy Anthes
Institutionalized Service-Learniing In The 50 States, Kathy Anthes
Service Learning, General
Service-learning is a teaching method that combines service to the community with classroom curriculum. Service-learning is more than merely community service. It is a hands-on approach to mastering subject material while fostering civic responsibility. On a programmatic level, service-learning in America is thriving. Through funds from the Corporation for National Service, almost every state has resources and some level of a service-learning program. Although practitioners and other service-learning advocates have long regarded service-learning as a way to increase student achievement and student civic engagement and decrease a host of problems, such as drop-out rates and school crime and violence, there …

An Introduction To Service-Learning For Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders: Answers To Frequently Asked Questions, Howard Muscott
An Introduction To Service-Learning For Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders: Answers To Frequently Asked Questions, Howard Muscott
Disabilities
Service-learning is on the rise again in schools and communities. Never in the history of our nation, have more students been involved in activities designed to integrate service in the community with academic learning in order to meet the needs of both the students themselves and the communities they serve. According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics (Skinner & Chapman, 1999), 32% of all public schools and nearly ½ of all high schools organized SL as part of the academic curriculum, with 53% reporting mandatory participation. This reciprocal engagement between schools and their communities has occurred in …

It’s like a colored cube. You try to put it together, you get so frustrated you want to throw it at the wall and smash it. But you have to take time; you have to cooperate with it. You have to make it go the way it needs to go. When you finally do it, you’re like, man, I’m kind of glad I didn’t throw it at the wall and smash it. So I know how to do what I need to do now. I know what I need to do to make this cube work. And sometimes life is …

Principles Of Good Practice For Service-Learning In Preservice Teacher Education, Jeffrey B. Anderson, Don Hill
Service Learning, General
The purpose of this document is to provide principles to guide the integration of service-learning into the preservice teacher education curriculum. The ten principles included here were developed by a group of over 80 teacher educators and service-learning practitioners from all regions of the U.S. who contributed their ideas and feedback in order to achieve consensus. (Contributors are listed in Appendix B). These principles of good practice can be used by teacher educators to design and assess their service-teaming activities, and by policy makers to guide decisions regarding resource allocation and program development.
