For the past five years, a thoughtful and engaged dialogue has been occurring among faculty, staff, students, and administrators at the University of Maine and the University of Maine at Machias to discuss the meaning and enactment of UMM — Maine’s coastal university — as the regional campus of the University of Maine. And much has been accomplished toward administrative integration, alignment of curricula and programs, budget integration, and enrollment management.

In 2016, the University of Maine System Board of Trustees (BOT) first introduced the details of a new primary partnership between the University of Maine and the University of Maine at Machias (UMM). In the five years since that announcement there has been substantial work undertaken by committees and individuals on both campuses and at the University of Maine System level.

As contexts shift, the need to realize and solidify the more specific component of the BOT policy - that UMM is a regional campus of the University of Maine - is becoming increasingly critical.

Construction of the $78 million Engineering Education and Design Center (EEDC) on the University of Maine campus began in May 2020, with workers following state-mandated health and safety guidelines. Work on the 105,000-square-foot facility is expected to be completed in spring 2022.
