Don’t be confused by Sharon Versyp’s personable demeanor and easy-going smile. Behind that exterior is a fiercely intense competitor who has worked hard and enjoyed success at every stop in her playing and professional career.

This made her first season as a head coach all the more challenging. Versyp took over an inexperienced squad that was further weakened by team injuries and departures. After being selected sixth in the preseason coaches poll, she led her team, made of just eight players at the end of the 2001-2002 campaign, to a respectable fourth-place finish.

The University of Maine men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are prepared to make another run at the America East Championships in the 2001-2002 season. A talented and experienced Black Bear team will seek to build on a solid core group of returners, with the addition of a strong collection of first-year swimmers and divers. Head Coach Jeff Wren begins his 12th campaign and is joined for the fourth consecutive season by assistant coaches Mark Babin and diving coach Jaret Lizzotte. Past Black Bear standout Susie Lizzotte enters her third year on Wren’s staff.

"I feel like this is the best volleyball team we’ve ever assembled at the University of Maine.” Strong words from Head Coach Sue Medley, who begins her third year at the helm of the Black Bear Volleyball program. After enduring a winless 1999 campaign, in UMaine’s return to NCAA Division I play after a 16-year absence, Medley led a talented bunch of newcomers to a 12-18 record in 2000. And while that was a tremendous turnaround for the program, Coach Medley has her sights set on something bigger for 2001: the America East Tournament.

The 2001-02 University of Maine hockey team may return several familiar faces, but it's strengths and weaknesses will not at all resemble last year's 20-12-7 Black Bear Squad.

Defense carried the 2000-01 Black Bears to their 11th NCAA appearance in 17 seasons under the direction of Head Coach Shawn Walsh. UMaine finished last season ranked seventh nationally and sixth in scoring defense, allowing only 2.44 goals against per contest.

The University of Maine softball team enters year two of the Deb Smith era expecting more offensive balance and a return to the America East tournament. The Black Bears will go forth without offensive force and 2000 America East Player of the Year Sara Jewett, who graduated after a stellar four-year career. Though it’s impossible to replace a player of Jewett’s caliber, Coach Smith expects better offensive production throughout the lineup to make up for the loss.
