Investigating The Enduring Fascination With Dublin's Victorian Pubs, James Peter Murphy
Conference papers
Victorian pubs of Dublin have played an integral role in the social, cultural and economic history of Ireland’s capital from their early development in the front rooms and parlours of Dublin homes they are one of the most iconic elements of Irish culture. These pubs have always been a strange mixture of tradition and curiosity which forms an integral part of the rich tapestry of Dublin life dating back to their creation nearly 200 years ago. A proud brewing and distilling tradition of these pubs combined with their natural hospitality and sociability, have all contributed to making the pubs of …

Listen Up: Reflections On The Cdi And Hse Speech And Language Services In Tallaght West: Early Intervention, Speech And Language, Noirin Hayes, Judy Irwin
Reports
The early intervention approach described in this report, which was developed by CDI and evaluated by Dr. Noirin Hayes and Judy Irwin, engages both parents and teachers in a meaningful partnership via a three-pronged approach, whereby the therapist works with the child and the parent/carer and the Early Years practitioner or teacher. We have long recognised in other domains, such as health promotion and youth crime prevention, that no single agency or discipline can fully resolve difficulties and this learning has been integrated here to inform an innovative and effective model that brings added value, minimises stigma and employs an early …
How The Entrepreneurial University Should Overcome Barriers To Recruiting And Retaining Early Career Researchers, Eoin Dunne
System and Institutional Design and Transformation
This paper will identify barriers to recruiting and retaining early career research talent in higher education today, and consider how to overcome these barriers. The need for a pipeline of research staff is being driven by a requirement for higher education institutes (HEIs) to commercialise their knowledge and research findings in support of socio-economic objectives, and to compensate for the ongoing reduction in state funding. Using the concept of the entrepreneurial university as a lens, this paper describes how higher education must adopt to significant forces for change, which if left unchecked, will outrun their ability to respond. To further …
The Evolution Of A Stakeholder Model For Dit As It Enters A Merger Of Three Institutes Of Technology In Terms Of Policy Definition And Control Of Implementation, Deborah Brennan
System and Institutional Design and Transformation
As the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) prepares to amalgamate with the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown (ITB) and Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT) in advance of becoming a technical university, we present a comparison of stakeholder research from 2008 and 2016, questioning how DIT might become better able to respond to the radically changing environment it faces. Using the McNay Model and Fourth Generation Evaluation, we consider the views of two groups of DIT stakeholders on the best model for change. In both years, it was felt that the entrepreneurial university model from the USA was unlikely to be successful, …

Report On Shopper Travel Behaviour In Dublin City Centre, David O'Connor, James Nix, Simon Bradshaw, Enda Shiel
Students Learning with Communities
Traders on Dublin’s two main shopping streets considerably over-estimate spending by shoppers travelling by car and Luas while significantly undervaluing the spend of bus passengers and pedestrians. A study interviewed 1,009 shoppers on Grafton and Henry streets seeking to identify differences (if any) between perceived and actual spending levels by travel mode. Bus carried 35% of shoppers to Grafton St and 49% to Henry St; this compares with traders’ perceptions of 31% and 40% respectively. Measured in value terms, bus proved the most lucrative mode to both streets, delivering 38% of the total spend on both streets, when outliers are …

Driver Behaviour Near Schools In South County Dublin, Bernadette King
Students Learning with Communities
This study assessed the driver behaviour of 1,200 drivers near three schools in South County Dublin. This literature review focuses on articles discussing factors believed to influence drivers speed choice and the perception of drivers towards speed limits and explore how the theory of planned behaviour or reasoned action has been used to improve prediction and explanation of driver behaviour. The primary goal of this study was to assess driver behaviour near three schools and establish if they are complying with the posted speed limit. It also set out to seek to establish what factors if any were associated with …
Learning And Teaching Chinese Language And Culture In Dublin: Attitudes And Expectations, Yiling Liu
Learning And Teaching Chinese Language And Culture In Dublin: Attitudes And Expectations, Yiling Liu
Masters
In response to a world-wide tide of Chinese language learning, educational institutions in Ireland have begun, in the last five years, to put in place degree courses and an increasing number of classes for the teaching of Chinese. It is helpful to understand the attitudes and expectations of students and teachers concerning the learning and teaching of Chinese language and culture in an Irish teaching environment. Language is part of a particular culture. The learning and acquisition of a target culture are as important as learning the language per se. In a non-target language environment, the learning and teaching of …
