Building An Understanding Of The Effects Of Power And Privilege On Human Development, Doris Ravotas Phd Jan 2018

Building An Understanding Of The Effects Of Power And Privilege On Human Development, Doris Ravotas Phd

Diversity Learning Communities

Introduction: Human development textbooks and courses traditionally address diversity and sociocultural influences on development but seldom are these points extended to an understanding of the role privilege and power plays in human development. Students (particularly privileged students) do not make this jump by themselves. This project was developed to explicitly extend an understanding of sociocultural influences to the major influence that privilege plays to build a general understanding about how power and privilege function in our society.

The Problem: There is little doubt that meaningful in-class engagement with diversity issues leads to important educational outcomes for students (Antonio et el, 2004; Cole, 2007; Umbach & Kuh, 2006). The frequency of this engagement often depends on institutional climate, faculty discipline, and faculty socialization (Patton and Hannon, 2008).

Why a luncheon?

Over the past 10 years, 115 university employees and students have been engaged in either or both the Everyone Counts Diversity Learning Communities and Leadership for Diversity, Social Justice and Inclusion.

This luncheon was planned in order to continue building a community of collaboration, facilitate campus synergy, and encourage future participation in the learning communities.

Race And The Society For Historical Archaeology: Steps Toward Claiming An Anti-Racist Institutional Identity, Michael Nassaney

Diversity Learning Communities

Background:

Archaeologists, as social scientists and humanists, are well aware of the ways in which our personal and political lives influence our practice and vice versa. Since the 1980s archaeologists have paid increasing attention to the rationalization of the past and how white privilege, white supremacy, and racial hierarchy structured the material world. Yet less attention has been paid to how these conditions structure our practice. Since the discipline remains predominantly white, it follows that our practice supports and reproduces values, attitudes, conditions, and worldviews that privilege whiteness. If this compromises our discipline and makes us intellectually and emotionally …
